Is it possible to copy Trainz from one PC to another?

I have TS12 on my laptop. I would have it on my other computer, but the DVD bay on the other computer is broken.
I do happen to have an external hard drive that has just enough space for the game.

So, is it possible if I hook the external drive to my laptop, copy and paste the TS12 folder to the hard drive, take it and put it in my other PC and copypaste the game to it?

It will work like a charm. I've done it twice with three or four different versions. :)

Just make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card on the other computer as well as the latest versions of OpenGL and DirectX. This might not be a problem if the other computer is already set up, but it is worth checking.

I'm sure Shane Turner will be able to correct me if I am wrong and advise further. :)

Yes. But using Windows copy and paste will take a long, long, long time. It first counts all the files and then has a cup of tea and a biccy, then a nap and then, and only then, does it start. I use FastCopy (Google it - it's freeware) and this does the job in less than half the time.

Why don't you connect the external drive to laptop, copy contents of the DVD (installation files/folders) to a folder located on the external drive (call it TrainzInstall) and then connect it to the computer with broken DVD bay... run the installation from there... that would work, also.

However, it would make the transfer longer as all the custom content the OP has downloaded will still need to be transferred.

Just remember according to the license, you can only operate one copy and leave the other for backup. If you want to operate 2 installations on separate pcs, you need to buy another TS12 (not too expensive now).

EDIT: This is not absolutely correct, see my license quote later on in this thread....

Show me where it says that in the license.

I think you misinterpret the EULA, as to burning multiple disc copies ... but I think it is not restricting software installations. You can read the EULA as you wish, and misread its actual meaning. I really think that N3V is not going to come after you if you install Trainz on your 3 laptops, and your 3 desktops, that are actually operating in your own home, by you alone.

The way I understood it was if you bought and registered Trainz, that you could put it on as many PC's, that you own (no limit), just as long as it was your PC's, for your own private use on your own PC's, and not to be used, given away, sold, re-distributed, or transferred to other persons or their PC's.

I'm trying to pull up the TS12 EULA, but what deneban said is generally true for most software EULAs. You can install it on as many of your own computer as you wish, but you can only have one installation as the 'active' version. The idea is that you have it only installed on your main computer for trainz. But you are allowed to install it onto your next computer, provided you stop using it on your main one.

That all being said, the likely hood of N3V doing anything about the fact that your using TS12 on 2 computers is pretty low.

.
Thanks for the reinforcement perrock...
Ironically, I did have to pull up the eula from starting to make a new install on the same pc, which is a violation of the licensing that I am seeking to read! See above, I remembered incorrectly below.

Hey cascade, heres the quote from the license (which ironically I had to get by starting a new install (which is forbidden ironically by the license!!)). Its pretty cut and dry about the install and only at one time:

4.1 Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, N3V grants to you a personal, non-transferable and non-exclusive license to

(a) install and use the Software, at any one time, on a single stand alone computer in accordance with normal operating procedures as notified by N3V from time to time; and

(b) either

(i) make one copy of the Software that is in electronic form solely for back-up or archival purposes in support of your permitted use of the Software; or

(ii) transfer the Software that is in electronic form to a single hard disk, provided you keep the original solely for back-up or archival purposes.

Apparently I remembered wrong in my quote below so now I have set things right.

"Content manager is Offline.

Please check your internet connection and firewall/proxy settings to access the Trainz Download Station."

Said this as soon as I started Content Manager on this PC.
I logged off of CM on the laptop (aka made it offline by removing my username and password), how can I fix this?

I think they heard you were installing a second copy on the same license.

Did you do what the CM asked?

Try to re-entering your name and password in the settings dialog. If that doesn't work, try the network diagnostics menu item.

I really think you are reading the EULA, misinterpreting the wording, reading it in exact context, reading it the way you want to hear it interpreted.

No one in the world would be so silly as to buy 2 Trainz discs, to operate it on 2 separate PC's ... Stop being a silly stickler for details ... The N3V Poilce ain't gonna come knockin' at your door, because of the EULA wording

Tried it, still didn't work.

The diagnostic is not supposed to fix it, it just lets you know what the problem is.
