iportals??

I am working on a rather large map. The Western New York region (Buffalo, NY USA. I am having difficulty understanding the concept of iportals. I want a train to enter a portal and reappear in another part of the map. I could just loop the track but it seems very unrealistic since I am trying to prototype my area. Obviously I do this with my real life model railroad because I have to (space problems). I'm not in a position yet to merge routes, or send consists to another Trainz member.
I'll probably kick myself for not figuring this out on my own. I guess I need step by step instructions.
Thanks
Jeff S.

pware's (Peter Ware) response to this thread should help you out.

I followed his instructions when creating my first portal today and it works a charm.

One thing I'll stress is if you want a train to follow the same orders again when re-entering the route is to put a repeat command after the "navigate to portal" command.

It should also be noted that iportals are used to send trains over the internet to other players/buddys.
As pointed out previously, portals are used for sending trains to different parts of your map. They are indeed very useful.
