I isntalled it as a standalone product then imported my older content. This was better because I didn't lose my old version just in case something had gone tits up during the install.

Once I was comfortable with TS2010, I uninstalled the old version.

Just backing up what John C said.

I would suggest you install 2010 as a new installation (stand alone) and apply any service patches to get it up to date, if you have any (personal or downloaded) content in 2009 which you want transfer in 2010 you can import it from the 2009 install.

Then, after everything is working, you can delete the 2009 installation.
