Installation problem

It's OK - I will be back online tomorrow (around 9am GMT time), so if you have any more issues, I will have a look then.

Just so you know, the base TS2010 game normally is not the latest patched version, but patches are available - all you need to do is find the one that corresponds to your build number.

Also note with the patches that they appear to stop half-way - do not cancel it, unless it says Patching Aborted (and if it does say that, post back here with the error reported just above that message)

As just a quickie (I will be at work until after 1800 BST), when I tried the Start button in the Launcher, the screen went blank, and the only way of rescuing things was to do a hard shutdown on the button. Re-booted OK, then on opening the Launcher again, there was a Patch Available notification. I Downloaded Patch Installer, and then clicked Run Patcher. The Auran Patcher (Trainz Patcher) window opened, and the download started. It stated:
"Checking for available disk space for patching.
Searching for patches...
Downloading patch file..."
Then, after about a minute and a half:
"Unpacking patch file...
Failed to extract the patch archive.
Patching aborted."
I clicked Exit and opened Launcher again. The same happened, same result. So here's an extra problem to get around.

This is a known issue with the autopatcher.

Your best bet is to note the 5-digit build number then find the patch where the patch link starts with your exact build number and ends in 44088.

The patches are available from http://www.auran.com/servicepacks/#TS2010.

Shane

EDIT: The build number is in the bottom-right corner of the Launcher screen.

Right. '42203 -> 44088' is now downloading. I note the following:

"To avoid any complications while patching, we recommend doing the following:
Please clear out the Temp folder on your computer. When you are ready to install the patch, disconnect your internet connection and shut down all programs (including anti-virus and similar). Now run the patch. We recommend that you leave the patch to install overnight, and that you do not use the computer whilst the patch is being installed. You may also want to try installing the patch under Safe Mode in Windows."

How important are the various processes as described there? For instance, isn't 'Safe Mode' being a little over-cautious?

Also, I see that in the section underneath there is another patch for 42203, ending " -> 43434". Is that one already included in the latest patch '42203 -> 44088'?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but this is a nervy first-time with this program, as it's not as straightforward as I had hoped.

I agree regarding Safe Mode being a bit over the top (after some experiences I've had)

It is best though to disconnect from the Internet and disable your antivirus software though.

Also, defragmenting your hard drive is a good idea.

Be aware that it will appear to pause approximately half way through - as long as it has not said 'Patching Aborted' during that attempt, do not cancel it.

Defragged Friday. Currently reads 0% fragmented.

If I am to leave it to install overnight, I won't be there to cancel it if it says Patching Aborted. I will notice that in the morning. Not a problem that though, as this whole setup experience looks as though it will be a long-drawn-out process - a couple more hours of waiting won't hurt.

Thanks

Lee.

The reason an overnight install is suggested is due to the fact that the patch can take upwards of 2-3 hours.

Shane

Yeah Shane.

I think I will do that overnighter. As long as I can see a resolution to a problem (and I think you're going to help get me up and running with this), I am a pretty patient guy. There's no rush, if I get this running right at the start, there's going to be potentially years of enjoyment to come.

Thank you once again.

You didn't comment on the blank screen system freeze requiring that hard reboot. I suppose that's also a known issue?

Lee.

I haven't come across that issue yet (as I'm not running TS2010), but it may be an issue with that particular build.

See if it still happens when the patching is complete.

A quick note.
As part of my TS12 purchase I got the download edition of 2010. I too was nervy as I don't like the idea of Digital dlds.
Stupidly I clicked all the files to download at the same time and of course one of those got corrupted.
Looking at the file sizes and comparing with web info I was able to redownload the suspect file.
Then the whole thing went off without a hitch including the single patch needed to get it up and running.
(all video drivers etc were up to date).
It is now the latest build number and runs flawlessly.
Scary isnt it, but please persist, the steps you have taken and Shanes excellent help will see you on the rails soon enough.
(from my experience it does look like the bootstrap file had become corrupted).
Enjoy! CheerZ!

Hi Peghorse

Thanks for the encouragement, I fully intend to get this installed properly and running as best it can. I don't understand though how you clicked all the files to download at the same time. The bootstrap window which initiated the download seemed to go through the file downloads in correct order, and as far as I know, the only corruption was the installation initializer - as I said earlier, I found the files in a folder on my hard drive, and started up the most likely executable ("setup1.exe") - luckily I chose right and it started installing. This appears to have gone well, but I have to get the patch in there to find out if all is well. The blank screen freeze is still a bit worrying - I had to shut the PC down using the Start button on the casing. If that happens after the patching is done, I will have to look for another fault somewhere.

Will let you all know how it goes.

Lee.

Anyone.

Oh dear. The Auran Patcher which opened upon clicking "42203_to_44088.exe" immediately started looking for "Trainz.exe" on my computer. I don't have that file (it didn't come with the initial download, "Trainz10.exe" is the bootstrap installer so it's not that one either). I had to cancel the action, and the Auran Patcher then gave me the message:

"Unable to determine Trainz installation path. Requesting user to specify installation location.

Unable to determine installation location. Aborted patching at user's request.
No valid patch operation was specified. Patching aborted."

Found it at last. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Auran\TS2010\Trainz.exe"

Why the app couldn't find it I don't know. It's now patching.

I am sorry let me clarify my statement pls.
2010 EE digital download from Auran/N3V site that is provided as part of the Anniversary box set is supplied as 5 seperate downloadable items.
The setup.exe and four setup.bin files, (numbered etc).
I clicked them all one after the other so they were all downloading at the same time, without heeding any of the good advice or recommendations not to do so and to use a download manager, as the mozilla firefox web browser has one built in.
I am just hoping to paint the entire picture as I saw it from my perspective, purely for you to compare your experience to mine as it happened.

Your approach to this installation has me on the edge of my seat waiting for the final YAY!:hehe:
Thank you :-)

Ah. That is a totally different way from how "Just Trains" sell it on its own.

My story so far in a nutshell.

I downloaded a bootstrap installer ("Trainz Simulator 2010 web installer" as "Trainz10.exe") first, which opened in a small window. It then established a connection with the download servers, and gave me the option of starting my download of 5493MB contained in 12 files. After clicking "Download", it took (on my connection speed!) 3 - 7 hours to complete this, and confirmed that I had everything ("5493MB of 5493MB" and "12 of 12 files") that I required downloaded to my system (though no file path was mentioned or offered).

Once that download had completed, a greyed-out "Install" button became active. My initial reason for contacting this Forum was because every time I clicked that "Install" button, the window merely disappeared and nothing whatsoever followed - no install, no error message, nothing. I have now decided that the installation initializer was corrupted, as when I found the downloaded files on my system and clicked "setup1.exe", the installation finally started.

This now appears to have been successful, though a worrying aspect happened when I tried to start the actual program (just the once so far, as it appears I need the patch). The screen went black, everything in Windows stopped being accessible to me, and I had to carry out a hard shutdown via the Start button on my desktop computer casing. This is what is making the whole experience nervy, that fact that it might be messing with my whole computer system, to some form of detriment even. But I'll keep going.

The patcher has completed its work installing the update, and I'm about to find out where I am now with the program by trying to Start it again. Wish me luck.

Lee.

To all

Right. The Build Number is now 44088, as it should be after the patching. I clicked Start, and it went through the Asset Files checks (this took nearly five minutes!). Then the Launcher disappeared, and the screen went totally black - totally, as before, and the computer wouldn't respond to anything I did. Alt+tab to rotate programs, Ctrl+Alt+delete to bring up the Task Manager options, or even repeated Ctrl+Alt+deletes to force a shutdown - none of these worked. The computer itself sounded quieter, as though the working processes had stopped. So, once again, I had to press and hold the Start button on my casing until the machine was forced to shutdown manually. Upon restart, naturally, Windows was worried, and advised that I might want to restart in Safe Mode. I have twice declined this now and rebooted in Normal mode, and there appear to be no adverse effects to the smooth running of the PC.

But as far as Trainz is concerned, I now need the help of you good people to determine why my computer is not being very friendly to this newcomer app, or why the newcomer app is not being friendly to my computer.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. Until I get more input, I am stuck (and no closer to a "Yay!" moment).

Thanks for all the help so far.

Lee.

That now sounds like a hardware problem.

To help diagnose this one, I need you to run the TrainzDiag program, found in the Bin folder of the folder you selected to install Trainz in.

Once this has run, click View Log, then post the Pass/Warning/Fail section into a new post.

Shane

Hi Shane

No Bin folder. There are no other folders. All the items are contained in the one folder (C:\ProgramData\Just Trains\Trainz Simulator 2010). The only way I can get the TrainzDiag process to run is by uninstalling and re-installing Trainz (I have done this once, to check that the inital install was not at fault). When I did that the second time (the first time, I updated my nVidia video driver at the request of TrainzDiag), I got all Green Ticks and a total Pass. At the bottom of the Diag I was advised to change an nVidia CP setting relating to screen display from "Multiple display performance mode" to "Single display performance mode", which I did. If I unstalled and re-installed once again, I would then have to run the patch again to bring it up to 44088. This is frustrating beyond anything I have done recently.

Lee.

P.S. I do have the latest "TrainzDiag.txt file", which gives a whole load of info from 0215 BST this morning. But I cannot attach here, as attachments are not allowed.

Copy the text and use the code button #, to insert it into the post
Code:
 pasted text

That seems a very odd place to be installed to, by default Trainz should be in Program Files (x86)

It's actually better to not put it in any Microsoft created folders and install patch and run as administrator if Vista or Win7.

Also need DirectX9c adding if Vista or Win7, Directx 10 / 11 is not backwards compatible with certain graphics cards and you need to check you have Open GL drivers from the cards manufacturer rather than Microsofts drivers which have limited if any openGL support.
