Installation problem

That seems a very odd place to be installed to, by default Trainz should be in Program Files (x86)

It's actually better to not put it in any Microsoft created folders and install patch and run as administrator if Vista or Win7.

Also need DirectX9c adding if Vista or Win7, Directx 10 / 11 is not backwards compatible with certain graphics cards and you need to check you have Open GL drivers from the cards manufacturer rather than Microsofts drivers which have limited if any openGL support.
Thanks Clam/malc

Stupid me. There it was, in the Auran folder in Program Files, as you said.

Do you want the contents of the text file, or for me to do a TrainzDiag?

Well, anyway, here are the salient results, as far as test results go. I cannot copy and paste the whole file, as the Forum system says it is too long to post.

System memory

I think I've spotted one problem. At the time of the test, there was only 809MB of system memory available. Trainz requires at least 1GB to run?

Seems I would have to shutdown all extraneous processes at startup (and then hope!) to be able to run Trainz!

Apparent bummer.

Re: System memory

Even worse. By shutting down all non-necessary applications after starting up, I still only managed 920MB free. So I can't run this program with the system as it stands now, I believe.

Anyone with more specialised knowledge regarding how to free up more system memory would be welcome to post here. Thanks.

Actually with Win7 you need 2GB of ram to run Trainz and the OS, in real terms that isn't enough, 4GB would solve the memory problem.

The TrainzDiag I think is assuming XP, think it needs an update!

Plus it looks as if you have a shared memory graphics chip on the motherboard which firstly pinches system memory and secondly it seems from a quick calculation to only be 256MB. Ideally Trainz needs a dedicated graphics card with a bit more of it's own memory, most are using 1GB cards these days.

Having said that it should still run on minimum settings. Try Gamebooster from here http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html quite a few people with low spec PC's seem to get reasonable results using it, takes the "thinking" out of what to shut down.

If that doesn't help.

Can't help thinking that even if the PC locks up the screen shouldn't be going black.
May be an idea to check in event viewer in case there is something causing it, look for error messages, ignore anything that refers to side by side though as that's a 99% of the time Microsoft bug which according to them they are not bothering to fix...........

I've had a few other thoughts.

If it is indeed Windows 7, are you running Trainz itself as administrator?

I remember reading recently that a recent Nvidia driver update was buggy, and caused unexpected problems.

Also, check in the Trainz Options box (click Options on the Launcher to access this) for the following:

Graphics Mode - try switching between OpenGL and DirectX or vice versa.
Resolution - should be set to your desktop resolution
Bit Depth - should be set to 32.
Disable Hardware TL - should be unticked.
Fixed Vertex Offset - should be unticked.
Antialias Mode - usually better at a lower figure performance-wise.

You geniuses!

Malc: I installed Game Booster and got it optimized for my system, then launched Gaming Mode just before I initialized Trainz in Admin mode.

Shane: In Launcher Options, the screen res was drastically wrong, so that's been changed. I changed the graphics from OpenGL to DirectX. I reduced the anti-alias mode from 4 to 2. All the other things you mentioned were as they should be.

Having clicked Start in Launcher, it has now stopped going through that annoying asset count, and has opened up a CP interface with six main options - Tutorials, Routes, Scenarios, Saved Sessions, Railyard, Content Updates. And no black/blank screen, just a little disruption while the interface loaded!

How would you suggest I best test its future capability from here? Load a template or something? Just Trains have been on, by the way, and offered a refund or replacement should it not be compatible. May not need it.

I'd suggest trying the routes out and see how it goes, there are in game settings you can play with in the Main Menu, options for draw distance texture quality and such like. Increasing daytime fog and reducing draw distance can help with low spec machines.

Hint, there is a Gold Star in the routes menu if you click that you get to see all of the included route not just the ones Auran decided were favourites!

Plus in the Surveyor Options there is a box with a tick in it to display only favourite content, remove the tick and you get to see / use all the available items.

Thanks.

Have tested it out using the Tutorials, and it runs OK (though not brilliantly smoothly, but hey!). So I will be sticking with this. Don't know where the last hour went actually!

I think this thread is closed! :)
