Independent pusher units

Is there a way in Trainz to make pusher/helper units work independently from the units on the head end? Example, the pushers can be in notch 8 while the head end is in idle.

Manned pusher sets and DPU units on unit trains do this all the time. Yes, it takes communication between the two engineers on manned pushers and the computers on a remote DPU setup. In Trainz, steam engines do this but I have not found out how to make diesels do it.
