You can still use WinRAR - I have since it came out. That screen that comes up saying your 'trial has expired' is known in the industry as a 'nag screen' to try to get you to buy the product. You can use 7zip but you have to be careful where you get it from.

I have a question that has been nagging me for a long time, and isn't entirely off topic. Is there a reason why so many creators choose WinRAR over WinZip?
I believe that the manufacturers would say it is more efficient. Though I dont know how true that is. It has certainly become pretty much an industry standard.

RAR has been kind of the "gold standard" since it came out, quickly surpassing ZIP in the late 90's. Aside from higher compression, it also allows you to split a large archive into volumes, which is necessary for hosting and email services that have filesize limits. It even has a primitive error recovery option, although QuickPAR is far better for that function.
