Enter "gmax tutorial" or something similar in the search tab and you should find the answer.

gmax has some tutorials which can be downloaded from http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax and installed in addition to the main program files. Then they're available from within the program via the Help > Tutorials menu option. Although not Trainz-related, the first few of these tutorials provide an excellent introduction to using gmax and are probably the best place to start. The later more advanced tutorials can be ignored at least initially.

Before making the commitment into GMAX have a look at Blender.

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Trainz/Tutorial_for_Blender#Newcomers_start_here

In particular have a read through Paul Hobb's first Blender tutorial

http://www.44090digitalmodels.co.uk/

Note that Paul also has some very good GMAX tutorials that were written earlier and you should at least do the first one before doing anything else. It deals with how to set up GMAX.

There's an old saying that is very appropriate, walk before you run. In other words, start by making a simple box. Once you can do that and have it appear in Trainz, textured as you want, work you way up to more complicated objects. The things and techniques you'll learn along the way will all be useful. How will you know when you're ready to make your freight car? When you can imagine every step and have no doubts about how to make every needed piece.

Looking forward to seeing your creations.

Content Creation Support section

And go to the section above. It's a better place to post anyway as most of the creators look there and you may get more response.
Take note of the wise words here, I did and look what I have produced in a few weeks.
If you get stuck, post in Content Creating & Support and you'll get a quick reply.

After looking through the tutes just go in and dabble. Go into the Primatives and make things out of the shapes, practice with each one. Most buildings are boxes, although you can change a box into a wall if you want, and then they can be altered after your basic shapes are in place by twiddling the meshes.

Get these tutes

Go get these tutorials off Tafwebs site her :-
http://www.tafweb-trainz.co.uk/index.html
Practice with building the bank and you will learn the basics fairly quickly. Practically everything for a beginner is in there.

What I did was to put each page into my Favourites and then printed them out from there. That way you can ready through while still looking at the gmax screen, no breaks nipping back and forwards.

Good luck.
