If I were forced to upgrade my computer, can I take my payware content with me?

Learning... slowly!
Apologies for starting two threads so close together. I did one and suddenly realised I had more questions!

As I mentioned a week or so ago, I've acquired a PC and am wanting to start using it for Trainz. The PC is still running XP and whilst it's a fairly good spec for XP, it may be that in a year or so's time I am forced to upgrade a number of components and possibly the OS.

So, here's the thing. Whether I buy TS10 or 12, I'm probably going to get it as a hard copy on disk rather than a download, however I'm also planning on buying the S&C add on, possibly Auran's Duchess pack and also maybe one or two locos from Gary Price's website, all as payware downloads.
If I am forced to make a major upgrade on my computer which involves uninstalling Trainz, will I have to re-purchase all my payware or is it possible to either a) store the downloaded files on an external hard drive to re-install afterwards or b) get another copy of the same thing without paying again?

Thanks in advance; I just need to plan this properly as I'd rather not have to buy everything twice!

Alex

Your best bet is to take a copy of the UserData folder on your version, and put it in a safe place. This will cover most of your payware content, unless you've got N3V payware as well which may be present in the Builtin folder as well.

If you purchase TS12 and upgrade it to SP1, your Auran payware will be downloaded automatically when you enter your PlanetAuran username and password into the software.

Cheers Shane.
Scottbe8, I will not be adding SP1 any time soon if I do go with TS12! It'd be the hardware that I'd upgrade, not Trainz itself.

Alex,

As Shane said. All you need to do is copy your Userdata folder if you go with TS12, any version as that contains the built-in stuff as well as your own downloads. I've done this numerous times as I've upgraded or replaced hard drives, even run Trainz on my laptop versus my big desktop. All I did was copy the folder over and restore my shortcuts.

Any thing that I buy, I download to a saved file in my download folder then I copy all the files I've just downloaded and save them to two USB sticks, one for use and one for backup.

Thanks to all for your replies- that's really helpful and I think I'll follow the example of those who back up to memory stick!

Seems to me that all my payware downloads are on my accounts, either here or at Jointed Rail, alot of my products have unlimited downloads while others have a # of downloads aviailable, so as far as payware stuff goes I dont think that having to rebuy is a concern. Perhaps if a guy is download happy you may have to pay to reactivate a link. However all the products I have downloaded from the DLS would have to be sought out and redownloaded which will be a pain in the rear when I upgrade from this xp system. After thinking about that I will be doing the User Data folder copy thing, but my payware I feel is in a very safe place.
