I got Trains Fever!

Trainzing since 12-2003
I plunked down the $35 for Trains Fever. It's a cute program with beautiful graphics and a slow pace. I've only used it for a short time so far and I like it. It's almost like the old Transport Tycoon in some respects, which is both familiar and confusing for me at the same time.

For the price paid... It's worth giving it a go, however, it's only available through Steam.

Hi Mike,

I have that too. :)

In many ways, I like the old one better. Trains Fever is still a work in progress and has a lot of potential.

One thing I like about train fever is the debs have already announced the game to be moddable. Mods always add that bit to a game that was really needed but never included.

Yea the game is great fun. Finally a modern version of Transport Giant, Transport Tycoon, and Chris Sawyer Locomotion.

Had this pre-ordered and finally had a dabble last night.

First impression is that it has potential but very rough around the edges. Guess I need to start on easy mode on flat terrain but I found setting up a simple single track rail line between two towns used up pretty much all my starting capital. Very hard to get the track to match in some locations without a "too steep" or similar message. There's no "undo" button so demolishing track and starting over actually costs you money. Then there's only one train type to choose from (with horse and cart for road transport), the downside of having the game start in 1850 rather than (say) 1880.

Will persevere but I don't think - at least on initial experience - that it's as good as TTDLX or its clones, or Railroad Tycoon (2 & 3). Will probably appeal to those who found A-Train 8 a bit too complex but overall at this stage I would rate it 6/10.

I'd say my perception is the same after using the game for about 10 hours now. There is a lot of possibilities if the developer wants to put the time and money into the program. Laying track is awfully awkward. I was able to get a track close to where I wanted it by laying tiny segments at a time. This worked until I ran into a road which I couldn't cross and then removed the road which left a dumb grade in the way which I still couldn't cross. Finally I got the track laid down where I wanted it, but I couldn't put the road back in. I noticed that there are nice procedural frogs on the junctions. The signals, however, are not animated which would be a nice treat to see as the semaphore arms drop when the train passes.

Making money is difficult in the beginning, however, I found starting small and slowly really works okay. I built a short rail line between two towns, let it run for a bit then added a second train and a few horse coaches.

It takes time though to make money so you need to be patient and work slowly. I hate the way roads cross the tracks, but I can live with it until it's fixed. The devs are aware of that problem. The other is commodities. I have some trucks picking up iron ore and coal and delivering it to a mill to produce goods. Another set of trucks is supposed to pick up the goods, but instead takes iron ore away. They need to fix that so that trucks (wagons too) can be configured for specific goods.
