Hey I noticed a new picture in the USA thread. Just thought I'd give a poke here for an update.

Looks Amazing still!

Thanks Peter. I took a long hiatus from Trainz and "trains" in general. I've gotten back to it though and have been doing some more things with this project. I am currently in the middle of upgrading my computer...new 1000W power supply, two new 8800gt vid cards, and 2 more gigs of ram, which should arrive by the weekend. As soon as that is done, I will be posting some new updates here. I was hesitant to resurrect this old thread but perhaps this is the proper place to do it so that others can see where this layout started and where I hope to take it.

Cheers,
Fred

I've been needing more NYC motive power to run on this layout, especially steam locomotives. Yesterday, I reskinned one of bdaneal's wonderful 2-8-2 Heavy Mikado's, weathered and with New York Central lettering and numbers. The reskin is based on a photo by the great NYC rail photographer Ed May.

WOW! Some stunning shots! Welcome back to trainz! One of the reasons I purchased '06 was because I thought this route would be worth it (should it ever be released). I still cling to that hope! :hehe: By no means do I want to pressure you, but just take it as sincere flattery that I was so piqued by your route. :)

I'll ask it since no one else has yet :hehe: ...do you think Ben would okay it if you wanted to release the reskin? I'd definitely be interested in downloading it...

Keep up the great work!

Thanks, Gisa! Those are very kind words.

I emailed Ben Neal and he very graciously gave his permission to release this reskin. As soon as everything is together for uploading to the DLS, I'll put it up.

Between 1912 and 1918, New York Central completed one of the largest steam locomotive rebuilding projects of any rail company in the US . NYC contracted several companies to convert 462 G5 Consolidations to H5 Mikados. With the addition of 179 newly built engines, NYC had more H5's in their inventory than any other engine. They were known as "bulldogs" by many and were a common sight before WW2 on the River Division on the west side of the Hudson River. They were occasionally seen on the Hudson Division as well. NYC H5p #1375 was one of them...

You are quite welcome for the compliments. I really like this route because it has so much to it (two different lines on a river - water shots are always great) plus bridges and boats. The best of everything. :D

I'd love to know how you managed to get those tunnels looking the way they do. I didn't think that was possible with trainz...

Thanks then to Ben for allowing the reskin! Look forward to using it later...

Keep up the great work!

Tunnels? Did you say tunnels? Don't get me started on tunnels. :D It's just a simple fudge really and I don't think its a very satisfactory one. I replaced the texture file in a standard 2 track tunnel with the main one I was using on the cliff walls. I then added some camouflage greenery around the edges. I tried the dighole method, but didn't think it worked very well on this layout. Perhaps, in future editions of Trainz, the tunnel problem will be solved.

Cheers,
Fred

I figured that must have been how you did it, because it looks smooth inside like how a tunnel should be and it would almost be impossible to pull that off with digholes. I too hope they'll solve that problem.

Out of curousity, how much of the route have you finished? :)

That's difficult to say, Gisa. As a very rough estimate, I would guess 20-25%.

While making a thumbnail for the tender and editing the config file, I noticed...ooooops!...wrong capacity! So...back to the drawing board, as they say. :hehe:

This route still manages to stun me with every new shot, it looks simply amazing

Thanks skiingiggy. This is an huge project, but, as I go along, I will continue to post new screenshots of the parts that I think are ready for the light of day...kinda like what you would see in a series in Model Railroader magazine. :)

Norfolk...I think Tyler wins. However, I'm upgrading this one and eventually will replace it, perhaps sometime next summer. So...lookout Tyler...I'm coming for ya! :D

Hi Fred

You are more than welcome. To be honest, when I received a request to make it, I did it just as much for your route as I did for the original requester, as a lot of the photos of the P32 were Amtrak ones on the Hudson River. It looks just in the right place in your pic and am really glad you are back working on your layout.

You've even got me thinking about some USRA mikes and maybe even a freeware J3A. Still got a couple of other things to clear off the plate first, and work is still full on, but you've always got to have a list!

Cheers
Tony
