How to put more memory into Trainz?

hi all

Is it possible to put more memory into Trainz for it to work better (eliminate lag etc)?

If so, how is it done?

Hi,

Trainz can only use the memory in your computer.

Before anyone can really give you advice, can you post your PC specification? - Include the Operating system as well - that will have an affect:-

You can do other things to reduce the lag as well - but it all depends on your PC Set-up.

Example:-
Athlon X2 4200 (dual core)
2 Gb RAM
Win XP (sp3) 32 bit
nVidia GT 6600

Win XP can't address much more RAM, so Trainz con only use what the OS lets it see.
You can improve performance by making sure that other applications aren't using memory/processor time by running at the same time.
make sure that the Virus checker is NOT scanning your Trainz folder & files
Try using Direct X instead of OPEN GL (or vice versa).

You do need a good graphics card with TS 2010 - that way some of the processing can be done by the graphics card...

There's a way to get it to use up to 3Gb in any 32-bit OS, but how that would be done depends on which Windows version you run. But I have yet to have Trainz break 2Gb, even on a 64-bit OS.

What's your hardware?

TS2010 will use a max of 2 gigs of memory under a 32 bit operating system and 4 gigs under a 64 bit operating system. I think Win 7 is preferred.

Ideally you need another 512 mb of memory at least for the operating system.

I have;

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.66GHz (2 CPUs), 2.7GHz

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600)

2GB of RAM

Ok,
it may be possible to add another 2 Mb. That is motherboard limit.
Try using the Crucial memory scan, it will give you the possible upgrades.

I was running 2010 on a less capable system. I had to turn the graphics option sliders to low to get acceptable frame rates.
Try that for now as well as turning off any other programs you don't need.

Some routes are worse than others - you may need to compromise

Run the Crucial scan and see how much the motherboard will take. I'd also run Belarc then look up the motherboard and confirm the max memory.

With a 32 bit operating system TS2010 is limited to 2 gigs, however Win 7 should come with a 64 bit disk so you can just reinstall. Currently on your system Win 7 takes up 512 mb of memory leaving 1.5 gigs for Trainz. Win 7 32 bit can "see" roughly 3 gigs of memory, 3.5 on some motherboards if you are lucky. To see more memory you need to move to WIN 7 64 bit which can "see" at least 64 gigs if your motherboard supports it.

You sure that windows 7 64bit takes 512mb? Because on my system takes up 1.0gb of my 4.gb of ram.

Win 7 is flexible on its memory usage and will use more memory for buffering hard drives etc. if available and can hide bits of its self on the disk in the swap file. Since memory is roughly 1,000,000 times faster than hard drives the more memory you can use rather than hard drives the faster the system will be.

I think the message I was trying to get across is besides the 4 gigs for Trainz you need to allow a bit more memory for Win 7. As some one previously mentioned TS2010 rarely uses 4 gigs of memory.
