How to explore a route like MSTS

Hello,

I am new to the rail simulation community and I started out with msts. I have enjoyed the simulator greatly. My favorite thing to do is just ride the rails and appreciate the route. I am not really interested in activities or scenarios at this point. I can't figure out how to explore like this in trs2006. I have tried going through surveyor and doing a quick drive but I can't choose the to and from destinations or the weather/season textures. It also seems very aggravating. Also, why are there more routes in the surveyor portion than in driver?? I was going to buy the trs2010 but read a lot of negative reviews and decided to stick to the older version. Should I go back to MSTS?

Thanks and God Bless!!

welcome to Trainz. This sim is far better to use than msts, firstly surveyor will have all the routes that are installed or modified by you, they dont have trains on them all. Driver only shows routes that have trains placed for you to drive. Thats the difference. If you are driving the train then you wont get drive to destination, but if you set AI to drive then you will have those options. You need to select the DCC mode and click the green button next to the driver and a list of commands will appear select drive to and a selection of places will appear. You might have to right click on the driver and select continue from the list that appears. When in driver press the M key and you will get a mini map which you can look around the route.

setting up drivers from surveyor click top left of screen and a drop down box will appear with edit session in it. click on this and you can set up your trains, weather, time etc.

Hi Snowy

Welcome to TRAINZ from me also.

I have been with TRAINZ since before it was first released .. about 9 years ago. Before that I was an enthusiastic MSTS user.

When TRAINZ came out I was in Route-Builders heaven. I had tried route building in MSTS and found it diabolical. TRAINZ made life so easy.
With TS2004 came the ability to place locos and rolling stock easily in Surveyor and that became the bottom line for TRAINZ.

My favorite thing to do is just ride the rails and appreciate the route

If you simply want to drive locomotives I strongly suggest that you consider buying one (or all) of the TS2009 route packs.
These are outstanding looking layouts and are full of good rolling stock and you can install these programs as a driver-only version without buying TS2009/TS2010 and you will still have TS2006 installed and available to use as well

The add-on packs have a huge number of easy to operate sessions and are packed wth lots of good rolling stock and locomotives.
If you don't want to operate the sessions lots of consists are included and set up for you to drive where and how you want to.

TS:Settle & Carlisle .... British trains and rolling stock
TS:Cabon City ...... modern trams
TS:Murchison 2 ..... US / Aussi / Canadian early steam & diesel and rolling stock

I was going to buy the trs2010 but read a lot of negative reviews and decided to stick to the older version

I have played with all the major TRAINZ releases and have to say that I found TS2009 a very stable rfelease. And the TS2009 Content Manager is a BIG improvement on TRS2006.
TS2010 is new so my experince is less but I have had no issues at all with it and, with the inclusion of Speedtreez, I have found this to be the BEST version of TRAINZ yet.
Its not perfect but its brilliant and, in my opinion, with TS2010 TRAINZ has finally come of age with the ability to create and drive life-like layouts.

On the forums there are users with genuine problems with TS2010. However in a lot of cases the problems stem from a lack of computer literacy or the use of out-dated computer hardware thats not up to the task.
While some of those who are having problems will moan long and hard (and are ready to throw the baby out with the bath water) those who have no issues will often not say anything.

Many of us are having a good run with TS2010 so don't let the minority rob you of enjoying an outstanding upgrade.

Remember the complaints on the MSTS forums about TRAINZ when it came out.

Also, why are there more routes in the surveyor portion than in driver?

With TRAINZ you create an empty layout and save it. These are what you see in Surveyor and they cannot be driven as there is no rolling stock on them.
Then you place rolling stock on the layout and save it as a session.
These are the layouts that are availabel in DRIVER for you to operate.
If there are no sessions with a layout DRIVER will not show the layout as there is no point .. you can't drive on it.

cheers
Michael

Hi,

The post by Sirgibby should be made a sticky and displayed prominately throughout this forum.

Not only is this some of the best advice I,ve seen for newcomers, but I think he hits the nail right on the head about all the moaners on this forum.

Cheers, John

snowylovesme (umm, should that be Tintin?),

You might like to try some of our activities. Yes, they are scenarios but in many cases there's time to look around as you're driving provided you keep below the speed limit.
