How to do the works on a steam train?

There is a few things that i have been curious about when it came to steam locomotives on trainz.
First, I saw a neat video of a locomotive that when the bell was rung that the bell actually moved up and down once the ( B ) button was pushed.

Second. How do you change the color of the smoke that comes out of the stack only and i want the color to be a white to black transformation in a sense. or just black but i dont know how to do it if i could get help on that then that would be nice.

Third, On a real steam engine when stopped the blowers on the side of the engine make steam go everywhere and i cant figure out how to do that either.

Finally, The Auxilliary tender there are very select few of these on trainz and does anyone know where freeware ones are yet and what the KUID is for DLS thanks!:)

1. The bell animation (on my engines) was a combined effort of animating the bell when I created the engine(s) and the gift of a good script writer who donated their time and effort to make my animation work! If the animation is not released with the engine, it will not work. If the animation does not have a scipt, it will not work.

2. Euphod is correct. You can find an engine that you like the effects on, and edit any other engines config.txt file to those SMOKE specs. Be careful what you do! make a backup copy of the ORIGINAL config.txt file first!

3. Again, on my engines I "borrowed" some smoke effects from someone else a LONG time ago. Plugged them into the engine and config.txt file(s)

4. Not sure what you mean by "auxlillary tender". Pardon my ignorance! AND it depends on what type engine your putting it on.

Perhaps he is talking about - what we called - the torpedo tank, a tankcar with extra water hooked up behind the tender for long trips.
There was also the SHV, a steam generating vehicle for the heaters in passenger cars. I have not seen any yet .

For a water tender, the next best thing would be an oil tender. Either one of those Vanderbilt ones or one of the Santa Fe ones or 4449 tender for a more rectangular shape. For 765, there's a freeware model at colorado71, I decided to use the tender from the 4449, reskinned to black for an auxiliary water tender. I made one skin say Norfolk and Western across it like the current one has. Only thing is that there's no knuckle coupler at one end, but since it will be coupled to the locomotive's coal tender, it won't really be noticeable. Also some Trainz tenders have a bar that sticks out that would connect to the locomotive, and this bar will intersect with a knuckle, sort of masking that there's no knuckle on one end of the tender.

Hi,

Steam effects are mainly inbuilt features of locomotives. In order to have the three variations of steam emitted from the smoke stack, white shooting with moderate velocity upwards, black shooting with high velocity upwards and white not shooting upwards at all, would have to be defined in the config-file. Alas- the programming inbuilt into kind traincar and kind engine-file does not allow for the change between the three smoke effects. This, however, might be achieved by additional scripting. There might be a problem of blending between the types op steam effects accoring to the operational status of the locomotive. It would also require a highly sophisticaded steam engine file. Since successful building steam engine files is limited to a few specialists and most content creators are not script writers too, extensive cooperation between a number of highly skilled trainz users would be needed.

As to auxiliary tenders as I understand the term, they are mainly the product of contemporary museum steam operations, which are occasionally seen on regular lines.
The problem here is, that most water filling stations, which steam locomotives need to replenish water at regular intervals, have been dismantled a long time ago. After all, economic savings achieved by dismantling the stationary infrastructure needed for operating steam trains was the major incentive to change to diesel traction.
Some railway companies operating steam museum trains are trying to overcome the problem by adding a second tender to extend the range of the steam locomotives. In that role they are using what they have available and does not look too awkward.

Accordingly there are no auxiliary tenders as a special type of railway equipment. There is, however, one exception I know of and which is documented by contemorary photos.
On some lines in South Africa a type of garrat locomotive was employed during the 1960s and 70s which had a rather small water tank on the front bogies, in order to achieve the low axle loading permissible on those lines. In order to extend their range, these lococomotives regularly trailed an additional tank car modified to carry water for the locomotive.

A real steam locomotive would have black smoke at low velocity from the stack when stationery, then after moving off there would be white steam mixed in with an increased velocity. When running under a light load there would be mostly white steam at a medium velocity until the fireman starts to feed the fire, whether it be coal or oil, at which time there would be an increase in black smoke. In Trainz most of the steam effects are controlled by the color tag, the lifetime tag and the velocity tag in the config file. The exhaust can also be timed to the cylinders by the use of anim2 in the mode tag. There can be more than one steam effect attached to a.smoke0, so you can mix up the effects quite well.

Just my observations,

Norfolk Southern has started a new steam program and both TVRM Southern 630 and Fort Wayne's NKP 765 have used a water tender on long distance NS moves and excursions. 765 has a N&W water tender from 611.
