I heard that you can take the ja files from a previous version os TS and copy into a newer version. Such as TS10 to TS12. How far back can this work? Can I copy the builtin ja files from 09 and 06 too?

You can import your data by exporting it and saving it as CDPs and then importing the CDPs. Another way is copying the JA files from one version and putting them into the new one. This works with TS2010 going into TS12. Both versions have to be registered in TS12, however for this to work.
The newer versions of Trainz can for the most part use older content quite nicely without issues. Some may have to be repaired first in order to get it to work, and there are many threads on this subject. It's interesting to note here that many of the routes we have built-in, still use older content from the earliest versions of Trainz. Some of this has or had errors, and others do not have any at all.
So before you go and copy JA files, remember that many of the newer versions, such as TS2010 have the older content built-in, so this process is a lot simpler than you think. In addition, if you are bringing built-in items in from TS2010 into TS12, these items have been made available to registered TS12 users up on the DLS. This saves copying and saving the JA files in your new program's directories.
To test, I copied the ja files from 2009 to 2010, did the EDR and I see the routes from 2009 in the CM. But I don't see them in Trainz itself. Why didn't they show up?
