What an idiot. He should have tried to raise the alarm in some other way, rather than risk his life (and the lives of others) in a foolish attempt to let the train staff know he'd been left behind.

Seriously, he is one very lucky guy. It's amazing he survived (although the article states the train was 'speeding' - as any Aussie railfan knows, GSR trains definitely do not speed through the outback. Why else do you think it takes 3-4 days to travel across the continent?
