How many cars in a unit tank train?

Pretty much what the title says. I actually just saw a Canadian Pacific oil train detour through central Pa. However, it was a mix of acfx, gatx, and a few other roadnames. With the tanktrain cars, for instance, what would be the unit size, or does it vary?

As far as I know, unit trains just contain a bunch of the same loads heading to the same place and/or coming from the same place. They probably vary in size. I know the unit coal trains my way run anywhere between 50 and 130 and 140 cars.

Yea, same with the coal trains here. They usually vary in size from 100 to 130 pplx hoppers. I have 40 tanktrain cars together, it seems like a pretty good size.

Once a week I see a tank train running down the coast in California with 89 cars loaded with crude. Must be very heavy as everything shakes near the tracks...

Hi Most of the unit oil trains comming out of the Bakken oil formation in and around ND are 100 cars, A lot!!! of new loadouts are been built to load 100 car unit train in 12 hours, more and more of this oil is going to move by train. Kern oil in Califonia have just ordered 800 new tank cars to haul Bakken crude to California.

Cheers

Lots
