I rediscovered this terrain texture not that long ago (see image below). It definitely represents an arid environment quite well. I am concerned that something of this calibre will be a nuisance to create. Does it involves exporting a 3d model from Blender, with each face using those 3 shaders albedo/whatever/whatever. I can't remember them all.
Does it actually include a 3d model, or is the 3d grass part of something else? Who actually designed "PBR Grass 16 - Truly seasonal"? It is very inspiring. But I have so much to learn. It definitely reduces the need to place tiny assets in every location of a route that traverses remote locations. Are there any similar textures that blend in with the orange decently?
I have been preparing the track kml, with spline points in the long straight sections to denote changes of gradient, rather than having to manually measure. Also, I am attempting to place the yards using G Earth, to reduce the need for any manual placement of track. I can almost picture a line of gum trees alongside a river, with a few birdies in the background, with a low sun and a pinkish sky. All accompanying these terrain textures. It is rather remote. There are only dirt trails that go near the track. It runs west of some ranges, and was never inhabited except maybe by railway fettlers. The route is mostly devoid of settlements with minimal roads and population.
