How far should my signals be apart if the limit is 50mph

hi all can someone tell how far apart my signals should be apart from each other if my layout speed limit is 50mph and what Signals

why uk signals some have 1,2,3,4 colour light signals so i can better place them on my route

2 aspect show red+green. 3 aspect show red+yellow+green. 4 aspect as 3 but with double yellow.
Use 3 aspect. Signal spacing depends on A: how many minutes between consists. B: the stopping distances needed by the heavyest of your consists.
C: the stopping ability of your choice of consists. Meaning some stop ok, some drift to a casual halt no matter what they're pulling.
You'll find its trial and error, a miles good in open ground but if you've loads of junctions close together more signals are needed plus maybe a lower speed limit.

Another consideration for stopping distances is the gradient. It will take more distance to stop on a downhill gradient and less when travelling up hill. When the LNER were running the high speed streamliners in the 1930s the stopping distance from 90 mph was between 1200 and 1800 yards depending on the gradient. This was with vacuum brakes so modern air brakes should reduce the stopping distance somewhat. See this site for information about modern UK signalling.

Here in Colorado, I have seen the signals spaced about 3 miles apart and that's on a minimal grade with a 65 MPH limit. Hope this helps.
