How Do You Add Roads to a DLS Route?

I downloaded a route from the DLS. While if has very good track layout and vegetation it lacks most roads. What is the best way to place roads onto an existing route? I have heard of Tiger data but it has been many years since I paid any attention to it and how to use it in Trainz or TANE.

It depends... If the route is based on an actual DEM and there are existing maps, I would then place the roads, or at least some of them, in the proper place. If not I would place them where they would make sense, and even build up small clusters of homes and industries along the way.

For TIGER images to load up in TANE you need to install the HOG textures. I believe most are built-in now, but there maybe some missing. It's been awhile since I've used those myself since I've moved on to TransDEM, which by the way has the proper textures for TANE and they work flawlessly.

I was trying to find an easy method such as used by another product to trace Google maps. I was hoping to avoid Transdem, and its learning curve, but ordering is probably the best course.

It's not as difficult as it seems. I probably use a fraction of the features outlined in the manual and get plenty out of the program. The greatest thing is the new release handles 64-bit and can build huge routes, and can import GEOPDFs directly, convert them to images, and align them properly to the UTM coordinates.

Also, Transdem won't help that route you currently have. Transdem is for the generation of new maps or textures. If you know exactly geographically where that map you have is at, then you could import accurate Google Maps data and replace all the current textures with it to build on.... But thats going to be a head ache. It'd be easier to just start a fresh map with TransDem and go nuts.

To add/place details such as roads, tracks, etc. to an existing route, that's based on a real location, you can use "basemaps". The methods required for using basemaps is described on this website. Search the DLS for "basemap" and you should find several basemaps in both 720 meter square and 1k meter square sizes.

There's also a basic tutorial here -- http://www.g0akh.f2s.com/Trainz/Basemap_tutorial.html -- that gives a very basic overview of using basemaps.
