They can use them at night if people are on the track.
Level crossings mostly have lights and barriers to supposedly control the traffic, myself I'd use rising bollards ( the foot diameter ones).
I wonder how many half wits would end up with their car on top of one of those while trying to beat the lights.
Move into a house next to a railway line and complain about the noise. They want to get a life and stop whining about it, they choose to live there.

hmm...not sure about sharpening them...
Of course, if your car breaks down on a level crossing, take your mobile phone, and get out of the car immediately. Nothing is more precious than life.
