I would avoid anything that has his/her KUID associated with it until we can prove it's legit.

Not another one - I haven't long dealt with another Russian user causing trouble with that.

Neoclei could do with contacting the Helpdesk so the issue can be investigated at their end.

In the meantime, I'm going to check if any more assets crop up from that user.

Shane

EDIT: Interestingly, the user created their Planet Auran account at the start of August this year, and has 6 items of content listed.

Hi Leksie,

Contact the Helpdesk and report this. This is a very, very serious problem.

@Shane - Here we go again! :(

Indeed. It appears that Russian users seem to think that copyright does not apply to them, which is incorrect as it applies worldwide.

Hmmm, maybe this is a good thing that I have to reinstall My Windows XP. At least My computer will be squeaky clean and don't have to worry about questionable and/or broken assets, I'll sure be more careful on what I download. I've had quite a number of assets, that I had to sort through to save and backup on CD-Rs. What a pain in the rear, but it's worth doing, for some of assets I cannot replace anymore. -Robert-

Hi All,

It is why I have never understood why Auran then, and NV3 now doesn't protected the kuids of each product that is bought, meaning that people cannot just open your folder from their cmp+ and start grabbing stuff like a kid in a candy store because the kuids of the product MUST match that folder to open!

Auran contents is protected so why wasn't our contents set up the same way --- in this manner no one cannot get anything from a folder unless he or she gets in contact with the original creator, and he or she would then send the mesh or folders, if choose to!

Just my 2 cents!

ish6 - if all assets were locked it would mean those people who like to legitimatly reskin a model for there own use or want to change a hornsound, an interior, bogies, enginespec, etc or fix errors that are thrown up by newer versions would not be allowed to do so and we would have to wait for updates from the original creator always assuming that he wanted to make the modifications. This I am sure would lead to a lot more dissatisfied users for whom making changes for their own use is a large part of the enjoyment of Trainz.

All that having been said I do agree that there is a need to somehow stop the few who are cloning, and re uploading assets as there own without any regard for the copyright of the original author.

I agree with dnevans8 about not locking the kuids to any/all edits. Almost all assets I download receive some sort of modification, usually to the Username and Queues (loads) in the Config file. This is critical in finding assets (there is no naming standard to help sort assets in Trainz) and many of the loads are just crap for the type of railcar to which they are assigned. I think locking assets to all edits would kill Trainz. I have gotten a very few assets in 2006 that were locked but I never used them (too hard to find) and most I deleted. I think it is up to the creator to challenge a "stolen" copyright. They should contact the Helpdesk with their evidence that it is their stuff and N3V should lock/remove the asset from DL until it gets resolved. I think editing content for one's personal use is wide spread but few share or redistribute tis content, especially where it is available for DL to everyone.

Multiplayer again? Scrap that or restrict to original builtin assets only and I suspect most of the problem goes away.

Hi,

You have a valid point there, etc ...

So I guess then we need to come back to N3V -- anyone caught uploading contents that it is clearly not there's, and have not gotten permission from the original author should be banned from uploading for a month - Second offend lifetime banned!

If they have a mac version, and a PC version as well, the content lockings don't work on a mac. So anyone can open anything for edit.

Yes the content will still be locked. This is done by the creator of the asset by adding in a specific tag-block in the config.txt file. Once that line is added, the asset cannot be opened for edit or even cloned.

It can on a mac. Something about the mac content manager bypasses the lock so I can open built-ins and JR payware for edit.

Thinking out loud here. Would it be technically possible for a computer program to use the data that describes a 3D mesh to generate a unique character sequence for that mesh? If so, could that be used as a basis for automatically checking whether a mesh is a copy of a previously uploaded mesh? If it is, but the author is different, then it could flag a warning of possible copyright infringement.

An e-mail could then be auto-sent to the person wanting to upload the copy, placing the burden on them to show proof that they have permission of the original creator, otherwise the copy does not go on the DLS.
