Help Time for a new motherboard and CPU

Hi guys I'm fed up with rubbish performance from my system.
I'm running
AMD Phenom IIX6 1100T 3.30GHZ
8GB Ram
Motherboard is ASUS crosshair IV Forumla
Asus GeForce GTX 570 1280MB
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) Memory Kit 1800MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 240-pin DIMM

My RAM and video card are staying put as are my 4 hdd and 2 dvd drives.
So I need at least 6 sata ports on the motherboard

I'm looking into these but what do you think?

Motherboard

CPU

I can't find out if this CPU would run windows x64 I would rather like to keep using windows x64 but no problem if I can't.

Max to spend is £400 at a push.

Cheers Rusty.

Both of those pieces are highly recommended. and the K CPU is unlocked, so you can OC it if you need more punch!

As Euphod says both bits of kit v nice...the i7 2600k is a scorcher for the price.

Personally I'd go for a MB with triple channel(3 ram slots)...I personally have an Asus board of the previous generation: P6T SE (socket 1366), so I'd deffo say your choices are sound:D

Edit : The CPU you chose will of course support Win64, as it's newer than the first i7's :)

Should be fine and yes it will run a 64 bit OS as will any Intel processor core duo upwards.

Odd though you are having problems, as I have a Phenom X6 1090T, 8GB DDR3, a 1 GB GTX 460, Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 and it runs anything Trainz can throw at it. Performance which was pretty good, increased when I put Caviar Black Sata 3 drives in it.

I'm thinking you might have a bottle neck in the system, processor and graphics are more than capable. What drives what are you using at present? How about a couple of SSD's? If stuttering is the problem it's likely to be drives.
Is your power supply up to that graphics card plus 4 hard Drives? I had to use an 800Watt PS for just that reason. PC would barely cope under load with a 600 watt.
Need to watch the rating for the 12 volt rail as the PSU may be correct wattage in total but not enough for the 12 volt rail.

As an added afterthought you are not using openGl by any chance as its rubbish on the Nvidia 4xx series cards upwards. DirectX is fine.

If you look carefully on ebay you can find the i7 2600K, new and boxed. I got mine a few months ago for £200. I also got my ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z mobo for £170 , "used" but very little used. If you got this combo your PC would rock, as mine does.If you do use the ebay route make sure the seller has 100% positive feedback, and pay through Paypal.

Just had a look on ebay and found this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sabertoot...5?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item3cc1032025

Thanks guys.

@ Clam1952 I seem to have no end of problems with this system trains runs ok no real problems but it will lock up for no reason. it took me 4 hrs just to get to the point of being able to use it today mostly I spend the time on the hp laptop at the moment.

@lewisner Nice looking rig you have there thanks for the info about eBay, although I to tend to pay a-bit more and buy though a company for computer parts after being bitten a few times on eBay.

Cheers
Rusty.

Its true that ebay has its perils - my first attempt to buy the CPU was from a guy with 4 feedback. He didnt post it and closed his account but I was reimbursed by Paypal. That said, most of my PC has been financed by selling components from its previous build so, combined with the reduced prices I have paid, it has cost me a fraction of what it would have done if bought from a supplier. Example- Windows 7 Pro pack for £70, £100 less than list price.

Note that there is not 'triple channel' memory controller on the "Sandy Bridge" CPUs.

Also, I would suggest using a motherboard with the Z68 chipset if you go this route.

I am surprised, though, that the current computer suffers from problems.
Or is there something in software that causes the lock-ups?
Maybe you are overclocking the machine and some inferior item causes you problems? (it could be inadequate cooling, power supply or something else)

Regards,
N.F.

Hi Nfotis

I've not over clocked the system at all. It seems to lock up mainly if I have any internet browser open while using 3dsmax. I even get it when just trying to use windows explorer to find a file.

I've reinstalled windows and all software that many times I'm fed up. so I thought I'd go from AMD to INTEL and hope tha solves the problem.

Cheers Rusty.

Russell, I think you should test your RAM if you haven't already. Often times it's the easiest to replace, least costly, and could cause crashes and lock ups if it's faulty. I've had some experience with this myself lately. I would suggest downloading Memtest, and see if that's the problem before you trash your current components.

I can't see why your having problems, the only thing you do that I don't is the 3Dsmax. I'm running a 3g quad extreme with an MSI p45 platinum mobo, 560 GTXti, 8g ram. Mobo+cpu are socket 775 which is old stuff but runs trainz a treat. The cpu is 850 watt, plenty of power to spare. I tend to agree with Clam about a-a bottleneck somewhere or b- is the psu big enough to cope. With my card I had to find a psu with 30 amps on the 12 volt rail, the old one was 650 watt but didn't have the output needed for the card.

May be related to this? Turn off the video hardware acceleration option in the browser as it can clash with 3d apps and games, or don't use it at the same time. It knocks out 3ds here when it's enabled in Firefox, makes zero difference here to browsing with it off by the way.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the help you are giving me.

@ Fran1
I was wrong about the PSU it's an 850W Cooler master silent proM nvidia SLI ready

Single +12V rail for up to 66A

@ Clam1952
I don't have that enabled on any browser (I checked before posting)...

@ Euphod
Ran memtest86+ got 1 pass and 0 errors.

The cooling on the CPU is not a stock cooler, I put a Artic Cooling Freezer Xtreme REV.2 on it.

Probably the motherboard then, I see from Google that there have been a few problems with that type or a version of it causing lockups on booting and blue screens guess that may also be a cause.

Power supply is fine although I had a 3 week old 750 watt Coolermaster literally explode on me around 18 months ago and I was only running a lot less up to date and power hungry hardware than I am now. Kind of put me off Coolermaster, so I declined a replacement and got a refund and replaced it with an 850 Watt Antec.

I'll happily take your old "rubbish" system off your hands if you don't want it! It's more powerful than mine!
Mick Berg.

I wouldn't pass it onto anyone like it is I might RMA the board and see if they can find a fault.

I've brought the new cpu however and I'm buying the board tomorrow or the next day.

Now what be the best way of moving everything?

I would rather do a fresh install of windows but I don't the hassle of reinstalling all the programs mainly trainz.

Cheers Rusty.
