Help in pinpointing fatal error (pictures warning)

I have recently created a route (a few baseboards) in order to sort out stock/locos. A week before this I had installed Mcafee and also turned on windows update (I had it off for a few years). One part of the update mentioned direct x, which after the update it had stated it was not installed as I did not need an update. I am not sure if either of these things is relevant, however I have since uninstalled Mcafee to no avail.
The main purpose of this is to make a surveyor list of trains to use on another route. I can edit ect. ect. this other route just fine, however I am experiencing problems with the route with stock/locos. Sometimes it will freeze (mouse still works) leaving me no choice but to hard restart. Sometimes it will crash to desktop and give me the option to view the log(s) see below. Sometimes and most often all is fine but upon exiting, it will freeze on going back to route menu (mouse still works but still am forced to hard restart). It seems there may be some problematic rolling stock? I had a problem with JR stock disappearing into a hidden layer or just showing up as red/green arrows (close together). Not sure if that is related. The only consistency, I guess, was when I selected a particular piece of stock that I had added after the problem however two times in a row it caused an fatal error. I am trying to pinpoint the problem and any help would be greatly appreciated..please and tanks! I have included below text from the error log.

when trainz crashes to desktop I get this:

You need to run your version in OpenGL mode to deal with that problem. Also, if you are using Windows Vista or later you need to use the redistributable version or my DXInstallHelper tool to update the DirectX files.

Unfortunately in open GL I get about 2fps. Also I am using xp :(

Unfortunately, that's the only way of getting around that error. You can try reinstalling your DirectX files using the redistributable version or my DXInstallHelper tool, but I've a feeling your graphics card is having problems on the DirectX side.

Well, I tried doing a system restore. Big mistake. "Your map is damaged and or missing files". Restored a cdp and ironed out a few red bug issues. All of the consists however, show up in name only. I have trainz on a seperate SSD, why would a system restore do this?

Since this is a graphics-related issue as Shane pointed out, I would have downloaded any video card driver updates and reinstalled DirectX 09c first before attempting a system restore. A system restore is not always successful and can cause all kinds of "other" issues as we've experienced in the past.

Direct X is fine it seems. When I try to instal 9c it states "a newer or equivalent version has been installed already". Video card is up to date, yet the problem still exists.

What method are you using to update your DirectX files, and what version of DirectX do you have installed? (check this using dxdiag)

Shane

I am pretty sure it is from Microsoft download center, end user. Windows had some updates to install, didnt help.. in fact I have now lost system restore points except for today.. this is really starting to piss me off

ok, so I used a utility to roll back directx to 8.1. Where should I and what version should I download? I am guessing DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from microsoft download center?

I would suggest you use the DirectX 9 Redistributable (June 2010) from Microsoft, or you can speed up the process by using my DXInstallHelper tool.

Shane

Thank you Shane, however I now get "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_42.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem".
and then the communication error pop-up.

I used the instal helper tool, dxdiag says 8.1. downloaded the june 2010 redis. and ran DXsetup, it said the files are now ready to use. dxdiag still states I have 8.1????

Sounds like whichever utility you used to downgrade DirectX has caused other problems. I don't like to say this, but you may also be looking at a Windows reinstall.
