Have You seen this

I don't think that content created in 2004/2006 should be removed... unless it has errors.......

That's exactly my point, why remove items that have no errors. I am in the process of upgrading my content to 09 which is going to take quite a while. I'm doing it because I just don't like my content having errors. I personally believe that as long as someone has upgraded to the latest version, they should be able to upload error free 04 content to the DLS and be able to download error free 04 content. I personally prefer the 04 platform and there are others that feel the same. I'm just expessing an opinion in the full knowledge that it will fall on deaf ears.

BTW, I'm glad to hear that you're going to enter the creation part of trainz. I find it to be the most satisfying part of the hobby. I really meant no offense, but I get a little testy when someone who hasn't created anything tries to tell a creator what they should or should not do.

Uh oh, if the rumors are true that changes are coming, will this mean that I won't be around, this has me worried and I'm using trainz 2009 WBE and I have no FCT!:(

Maybe the best solution to all this, would be to allow 04/06 users with FCT's to still upload, as long as the content passes 2010 standards, (& clearly state what those standards are!). No FCT no access, seems simple.

Seems like a pretty darn good idea.

There is an old adage in computer development that says 'all computer problems are database problems'. A bit of an exaggeration, but it is interesting that most of the controversy in this thread is the result of 'data overloading'.

Content Developers want to set the Version Number on their content to the lowest compatible version in order to make their content available to the widest audience. Auran/N3V, on the other hand want to use the Version Number to weed out content that is not compatible with the current supported versions of the software.

Or to put it another way, there is a Many-to-many relationship between Trainz versions and content; one item of content can be compatible with many versions of Trainz, and any given version of Trainz is compatible with many items of content.

However, the data structure only supports a One-to-many relationship. An item of content can only be linked to one version of Trainz, and that one version cannot simultaneously be the oldest and newest version with which it is compatible.

It's the sort of thing that tends to happen if you cut code first and then try to bolt a database on to it at a later date.

so that means I would be required to purchase a FCT to continue acessing the DLS,this still worries me!:(

Yup. Some of the best creators will just move away or stop. Personally I will use sites like USLW and TPR, but I won't bother to answer any questions about where to find things.

Please yourself, you may as well throw your teddy bear out of the playpen and your potty out the window while your at it.

Hi guys, all of you, manufacturers, manufacturing-like trainzers ;), creators -both old-fashioned's and go-ahead-forgetting-the-past's-, plain users and trainzy friends in general,

If Chris is Auran's spokesman on this and after reading some of his last intrepid straightforward statements all over the too scattered threads on this topic, I'm afraid that my civil reaction to this is:

Alea iacta est! You'll impose your policy, it's your right, but a not convincing one at all IMHO.

No one better positioned than you to choose what you think your way of earning a living must result in. You are the manufacturers and sellers, we the buyers; no problem, it's a question of offer-demand. ;) Just the wild trading market!

I've talked with a bunch of my business professors about this decision, and their response was that, while it is a pretty smart move on paper, it will probably end up hurting Auran in the long run due to customer dissatisfaction. The profit earned from the forced change will be offset, or at least equaled by the money lost due to poor customer relations. A better solution would be to improve the product, or provide an incentive for purchase.

I'm not so sure. 90% of the purchasers don't come to the forum and probably have never downloaded anything from the DLS.

Taking TRS2004/06/TC3 etc. off the versions sold probably makes sense. If you only sell TS2009/TS2010 that cuts your support costs.

What are we saying here people who brought TRS2004 for $15 or more will be cut off from free downloads on the DLS after September? The software still functions, there are many sites offering reasonable free content for TRS2004/06 still.

For those who have purchased recently most are interested in the newer content and having a lot of old content that has errors in it doesn't make a good impression on new purchasers. Some of my older items I'd prefer people to forget about to be honest.

Totally agree with your comments John.

Plus, TinyTrainz will bring in a new crop of Trainzers for the future.

Regards and have fun,

As I see it, this had to happen sooner or later, a lot of the assets on the DLS are ether faulty have missing dependency’s or missing textures, or badly coded, just because they still work in TRS2004 is no excuse, if most of the older stuff is causing problems and people are still adding more to the pile, you have left Auran with no choice, they will have to pull the plug, in order to survive, they have to shed some weight. If you want bigger and better you have to make some sacrifices.

I bet when all said and done TRS2004 will still be going strong for years yet,
Just not with Auran!
