Graphics Card Poll

Hi all,

There are lots of threads about graphics cards on the forum but some of them make for heavy reading.

I am starting this thread and asking users to add their own findings, in a line or two, so that other users that want to upgrade can look here for what works and what doesn't, or what works with compromise. There is a motive in this in that I need a new card and want some feedback on what to buy!

I will start the 'ball rolling' with my next post

Thanks in advance,

Andy

I currently use an ATi Radeon HD3450 with 256mb memory. Core clock is 600Mhz, memory clock is 500Mhz. My operating system is Vista. TRS06 works reasonably well with sliders set high, Trainz 2009 'stutters' unless I use low poly assests and set the sliders to 'standard'. Works best on DirectX but needs to be changed to enjoy 2009

your problem seems to be your graphics card from your other thread all i would say is nvidia all the way for trainz as ati cards dont do open gl very well, and a decent card with 1gig of v ram and you should be flying along.

cheers bob

I have an nVidia 8400GS, which is maybe a bit above the 7200 that TS2010 requires as a minimum. I'm considering a GT240 or maybe even a GTS250 and, maybe, another gig of memory (I'm at 1Gb now). But I can get a 220 and a gig for about $100 USD now, so maybe that's the course I'll take.

One problem that bugged me is some of the newest nVidia drivers broke some of my old games and stuff. We're talking stuff from DOS 2.0 - Windows 95 era, as well as some very recent builds of console emulators (Apple ][, Intellivision, etc.) I could probably run all this off my Win98 machine, but that's a PITA, and potentially problematic with the emulators.

ASUS GTS 250 512MB. Rock solid with overclock to 832/1999/2408 in Smart Doctor, which is a great OC-software if you have an ASUS-card.

i have a nividia 9500gt i beilieve. this runs 2010 perfeclty. how ever i used to have an ati 9250 and itdoes not show the speedtrees at all

NVIDIA 275/250. It works great with TS2010 with no glitching at all. I have the EVGA version and run their precision tool which allows overclocking and tweaking. I use it to set my fan speed higher before going into Trainz. This helps keep the video card cooler particularly during the warm humid days coming up in June, July, and August.

Well I have an ATI HD 5870 and it's great, TS10 works like a dream with it (huge framerates!) :D

Nvidia GTX260 V2

i have a problem of mouse in TS2010EE (SP2 retail france). The cursor disapears if i don't move the mouse.
Some time there is artifacts in place of the cursor.

Check the drivers. Also contact the manufacturer of your card. You may have a hardware problem.

Nvidia 8800 Ultra – works fine with TRS2006, TRS2009 and TRS2010

Nvidia GTX 280 – works fine with TRS2006, TRS2009 (I never tested it with TS2010)

ATI 4870x2 – works fine with TRS2006 and TRS2009 (I never tested it with TS2010) but the dual GPU's on the card (CrossFire) do nothing to help performance in CPU dependent games.

Nvidia GTX 285 - works fine with TRS2006, TRS2009 and TRS2010

ATI 5870 - works fine with TRS2006, TRS2009 and TRS2010

Nvidia GTX 480 – I should have some results next week but other than better AA/high resolution performance I don't expect it to perform any better then the GTX 285 as far as TRS2006, TRS2009 and TS2010 is concerned.

How does the GTX 480 compare, generally speaking, with the HD 5870? Are they broadly on the same level in terms of performance, particularly for 3-D games?

The performance is slightly better with the GTX 480 but the drivers are still unrefined to make a good comparison.

The new 257.15 drivers Nvidia released this week (they work great with my GTX 285 by the way) are really starting to unleash this cards potential. The 257.xx WHQL drivers should be released the beginning of June. One things for sure you really have to have a processor with grunt to back this beast up. I'll put up some results of the GTX 480/i7 980X combo some time next week.

On the ATI side of things the new Catalyst 10.5's have been released so I'll be trying them out with the 5870.

I'll be very interested to hear how this turns out in terms of the 5870's performance with Trainz.

Sorry, i have found the problem, and seen also in other games.

It was a problem of Logitech Mouse SetPoint software configuration
To have the good configuration, in the cursor tag , you must disable the cursor trail.:o
