A common mistake many have made when beginning to use the program is installing the crossings incorrectly. I did it myself many years ago.
Each crossing has 2 or more attachment points for track spline, and 2 or more for road spline, and the splines must be connected in order for the crossing to activate and work.
BNSF50 has made many wonderful crossings (among other items), but in the case of those, you may have a bit more of a complicated set up, certainly worth it in the end!
On the DLS, you may search for Level Crossings, Wood Crossings, etc...and you will find content that accomodates a wide range of tracks and roads. I think if you search for crossing boards you may find wood that you can place over any crossing. I'm not certain of this, however.
