Hi all

i do realise that this question has been asked a billion times before but i would like to know if a google map or earth image or data drom it or something can be used to create a layout?

and if you could put it in baby steps for me that would be fantastic

Cheers
Nathan

A well established way to do this is with texture carrier objects. One such set is "Basemaps". Search for this term in the forums and you should find a few hints. To use Basemaps with Google Earth a couple of manual editing steps is involved to zoom/clip/scale the images. If you are building a US route you could even combine Basemaps with the MicroDEM/HOG/TIGER approach and get a DEM based terrain.

It's all free. Admittedly, a bit complicated. Needs some dedication, skill and patience. But it's doable.

Another option is an all-in-one tool: TransDEM. It is not free, but takes over the cumbersome and error-prone parts of the work. See http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=49378 and links in signature below for details.

Nathan- I've had nothing but good experiences creating terrain with Transdem. I'm sure I could have figured out how to do the work with the free tools, but I would much rather spend my time in Trainz. My 2 cents is that it's worth the investment.

Please read the February and March issues of the Trainz Community News. it's widely publicised and I'm surprised you haven't read it already. The March issue covers your question in depth.
