Google earth's ruler

Hello all... I'm trying to build a route using google earth imaging, and was wondering if google earth's ruler is pretty accurate for measuring?

Thanks
Jim

The RULER seems to be quite accurate, at least in the middle latitudes where I've been playing.

However, watch out for the elevations. If you draw-and-save intersecting lines on two rail lines that cross, or a railroad and an highway, then compare the elevation profiles, you will find large (6-12 foot/ 2-4 M) discrepancies in the elevations at the intersection. The delta seems to depend on the surrounding terrain.

To achieve accurate elevations I prefer the US Topo Series 1:24K .

:B~)
