I saw a SP AC4400CW on my home from school while riding my bike. Unfortunately it was a patched engine so I recorded it although I took a picture I deleted it because I thought I had taken a video of it but I'll try to upload it today ASAP.

:'(I just don't like to see union pacific patch those locos but UP is still my favorite.:eek:And that is rare..., all the UP locos i see are just the same old scheme over and over again but can't see them no more because I'm in Sitka.

Well the goal of any business is to make as much money as possible, if you want good looking locos, go to a museum or tourist railroad. I have seen some beat up old locos still running that way because the railroad that owns it doesnt have the money to spare for a new paint job AND one of their locos to be out of service.

From a stockholder!

I keep wondering why people always have to bad mouth the UP. The priority of a business is to stay in business and make money for it's stockholders, if it did not it would be out of business. From an investors point of view UP does very well in a very competive business. They invest a lot of resources into their physical plant giving thenselves a good competitive edge. For those of you who would knock the UP remember the millions they put into their steam program every year, plus they will allow clubs to charter their equipment, no other class 1 does this, nor do they have to. I for one am glade they do. There is a lot of history that would be in the scrap heap if they did not. Most of the things I"ve heard from railfans that they don't like that the UP has done is because it has had to protect itself from lawsuits and stupidity on the part of the public, "ie" walking across bridges, through tunnels (actually saw some foamers do this with a train coming - couldn't belive it), sticking spikes in rail joints, etc, etc.

Yeah, UP patched mah 'Grande units, but I don't despise America's longest lasting railroad because of that. I celebrate the fact that they still use former D&RGW units every now and then.

Even with a repainting, at least they're still being used...

George,

I've seen dumb moves like this too. Foamers will do anything to "with the railroad", but the problem is they could never work for one because they'd spend more time watching for antique equipment and noting down engine numbers than doing their job. There have actually been cases of this in the past from what I've read over at Railroad.net.

People may complain about UP taking over SP and the Rio Grande, but at least the UP is still running trains on these routes. In the end the SP was in such poor shape that they could barely get a freight to run any distance at any speed.

Read some of the stories about this here:

http://wx4.org/to/foam/sp/southwest/carrizozo_sub/santa_rosa/worktrain.html

along with many of his other links.

By this time, the SP was heading into the same condition the Rock Island was going, and not too far from what Guilford (PanAm) runs today on its own lines. I'm not counting their reworked joint track with NS, or the MBTA (state) owned trackage in MA.

That would never happen. To tell you the truth this is why SP is part of UP. The Gov't or ICC wouldn't allow them to double track or electrify their tracks. Yes UP wanted to go PRR style but couldn't. And several years back I read an article saying that UP wanted to buy out ATSF but they already made plans to merge with BN and form BNSF and responded by taking over SP. Plus SP could run freights, its just the territory and physical geography of the areas they ran that wouldn't allow them to. Remember they would have stretches of single track for possibly 100 miles before double tracks would be seen again plus in the mountain regions, Tehachapi Loop/Pass and Cascade, and Lordsburg District really limited their ability to do that. Until 1995 when SP attempted to start double tracking a large chunk.

Plus SP had a lot of social impact in the areas that it served and that's something UP can't say. And Donald J. Russell deliberately sabotaged passenger trains on SP to take them out of the passenger service and they had the best passenger trains in the country at the time when people where going from rail to roads and planes started to become a force to be reckoned with. So it was the presidents in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s that hurt SP and others tried to help it out and it was just a mess and they never recovered. Between 1952 and 1976 it only had two presidents over that span of time. Just to show how SP was once the most respected in it's heyday. And feared.

Patched SP units arent that rare. There are a good amount of them still around these days. I saw a patched SP unit up here in MA last year. In April of this year when I was on my yearly vacation to Los Angeles. I saw a unpatched SP unit not once, But twice. I saw it the first time at Cajon Pass and I caught it again a couple days later in downtown Los Angeles. Here are the 4 shots that I took of it from both locations.

Excuse my ignorance here. It's a cultural thing...

Firstly, what's a foamer?

Secondly, by patched, does the OP mean the mismatched repairs to the loco? If so, on Eaglefan's pics, this is a couple of panels. Is this a major issue? Pardon me if I've got it all wrong.

Former is just another term for railfan.

A patched SP unit means that where the numbers are on the side of the locomotive. The numbers would be in a yellow box like UP colors such as the picture below. Click on the link to see the pic

On a side note, For those people who want to see more of my pics. All you have to do is search for Randy Dyer on that website and that will bring up 180 plus pictures that I have posted on that section of the website up to date and I post another new shot every other day. I also have pictures in all the other sections on the website as well.

Ahhhh, al becomes clear. Foamer. That's quite amusing. Sounds like a rabid obsessive.

So I was close with the patching. Nothing to get hot under the collar about really is it?

EF, your pics are way to large for this forum; COC says 800 x 600 unless in Screenshots. You're killing that!:p
