GMax and 3DSMax (And any other modeling program) screenies/renders

I didn't think I wanted to post this here, but since I'm not working on it much I'll give some time to let the drool collect.

It's already exported, just needs texturing and everything else.

Ok, my quetstion is this:

What about poly count? Is this train suppose to be exported into Trainz? OR is it just a 3D model for the beauty of it?

IF it is suppose to be exported into Trainz, I keep running into a poly count brick wall on my engines. I would love to have this kind of detail, but I don't think the program will allow it. Am I wrong about this? If so, what am I doing wrong?

And yes, I know there are a LOT of people out there that scream about the poly count. I agree with them to a degree. Computers and supporting programs ARE getting better, and it's only a matter of time before we have super detail like this! Will look a LOT more realistic! (one would hope)

I know Zapper doesn't have 09. However, if I recall right, he is using the 2009 Blender exporters. So long as you don't exceed about 18k polys per material in the im file, you can export large numbers of polys (recommended poly count for a full station is 50k polys now remember! Although you will need LOD ;) ).

So, there are a few points on this then.

1, you really need to use the TS2009 exporters (either blender or 3DSMax) to export more about about 20-25k poly meshes without seeing errors. Of course, as above, you can't have more than about 18k polys per material (you can have multiple textures using the same material).

2, you will really need to use LOD for the mesh to actually be useable in Trainz when working with higher poly counts.

3, do you need a high poly count, or can you replace it with textures and normals maps? Oh course, an object like a dome will look best with polys, but then normals maps will also help here...

Sorry if this doesn't fully explain it, I'm rather tired now :(

:D Thanks WEN, that is the best post of the day!

Your past work displayed even here shows a lot of time has been given to perfect your skills...& the quality of your work reflects those hours of study to accomplish what you want to do, something that cannot be poured into your head, it takes time, the willingness to learn, do & if things don't turn out the way you want, to learn why & how to achieve your desired results...

Money can't buy that experience, thanks for sharing, Russ!

And another thing for you. Use your time wisely. Most of my spare time travelling from College to home/uni, I had a lot of free time, so with a netbook (if it could stand the poly count) or the laptop, what did I do in my spare time?
Make a 3D object. I restricted myself to 3DSMax5, which DOES work on Windows 7, or did on the Beta. In 7100, my netbook doesn't like it, so I have to investigate why.
Anyway, if you are board travelling on a train, bus or whatever (yes, I've used the back seat of a bus to do some work), just kill time.
The laptop is a very powerful tool and to run just max, you can find a PC for less than £200 these days. If you mainly use your desktop, just put everything on a USB stick (Don't forget to regulary copy the contents of the USB stick onto your desktop!) and have nothing but XP/Linux (if you use Blender) on your laptops hard drive and do things that way. Of course, you could also share a folder and give it a limit of x amount of MB. (Which can only be done if you format your drive using NTFS). Therefore, if you have a 8GB eeePC and XP, you don't waste the space that way. :)
2 benefits, you plug a hole in Trainz for that item and you improve your skills.

So backyard, there is a lot I can think of doing. You don't really need to be tied to a desktop 24/7/365, just to make that dream engine or go for that dream job. (Thinking of small objects, I wanted to see how pratical it is to go small and still carry your meshes in your pocket and use the train/bus/tram/plane/car (not while driving), so I've looked at the Fujistu Lifebook U810 and the OQO models, model 01s can be found very cheaply these days and still have the guts to run 3DSM5/GMAX/Blender and possibly UTC.)

...I just might try that...

:D Yes Russ, I am working on a route just about two hours south of me, if I had a laptop, I'd be able to tour the area & see just what the grades would be real-time.

Thanks for the advice!

Realize that when this locomotive is in fact exported that it is in fact in multiple parts. In fact, in game it is two locomotives, the front section and the rear section. Then the driving bogey is in a separate file, and the front trailing is in its own file, and the rear bogey is in its own file. These polygons are not combined together and therefore TRS will display them without a problem. As far as I can tell the total poly count for all parts put together is around 44k.

And yes, it's meant to be for Trainz, as seen in this shot without smoothing correction:

Just for Trainz, you need a decent laptop. Anyway, what version of trainz are you using? 06 works quite well on a Pentimun M 1.6ghz, 1.5GB RAM, ATI radeon 9700 card

Thanks for the explanation. I too have multiple parts for my engines. (didn't consider the engine itself to be multiple parts). Wondering how you "marry" them together so that they line up correctly...? Probably should post in a different thread, or PM me.

Knowing that, I can make other engines multiple files also. Although I have had one concern over the poly count already.

Thanks,

Terry

Serious Irony

Well, after a Long, 2 month Hiatus from being Banned, (Not going to Explain; It was Stupid Nonetheless,) I'm Back on this Venerable forum.

Meanwhile, During my Absense, I tried GMAX, and have started working on Several 30in Locomotives and a few Items of Rolling Stock that will Eventually find their way onto the DLS as Locomotives & Whatnot for Trainz.

David, Zues, and SimulatorTrain have all seen my Stuff on the 30NG Trainz Website:

YUS4-4-2T.jpg

My First, and Favourite Locomotive; This Wood Burning 4-4-2T.

SittingPretty.jpg

Second; This 0-4-0 & Tender, Based off the Abandoned NYERR Fornies in an Alaskan Tundra. They and the Remaining Flatcars with them are Known as 'The Last Train to Nowhere'.

SmallRedBoxcar.jpg

SmallGreenBoxcar.jpg

SmallTankFlat.jpg

Third, are these 3 Short Freight Cars; Two Boxcars and a Small Tank mounted onto a Flatcar.

CylindersDone-TenderStarted.jpg

This Oddity is Based off an Actual Kitbashed HO Model. I can Provide the Photo if anybody is Interested. And Yes. It is a Modified Norris 4-2-0.

This is what I've done in GMAX so far. As You can see, I am Really not into Prototype Modeling. Fictional Steam Locomotives are More Fun anyway... :p

It's all in the final render...

The current cast of Content Creators around here produce the same locomotive detail, however many details are stripped from the final render & LOD is used in-game.

Can anyone calculate the poly-count?
