I've got this far with what I'm building. This is from a couple of hours yesterday. Little bit stuck though, can anyone help me with it? I'm a fast learner so it shouldn't take too long to get it done. It's a Manchester Metrolink M5000 if anyone wants to see the real thing for comparison :)

Voith Gravita 10BB

I've seen so many nice shots of (mainly american) engines in this thread so I started to model one "Made in Germany" in august 2012.
The Gravita 10BB is a diesel-hydraulic engine built and constructed by Voith Turbo in Kiel (northern Germany) in 2011.
So enough talking let's see, what happened until now…

The mesh is finished now, but there still remains a lot of texture work ;)

Cheers

That is sensational!

Sachsenbahner, what's the poly count on that beaut?

Mmh, so the poly count… :D
During the first half of development I had about 30k for the body mesh. But than I received a Great ZIP with detail photos from a friend and I found a little pipe here, another screw there… So in final state the body mesh is made of 150k polys.
Well I know it sounds a lot - it is - but in exchange I could reduce the count of of alphamaps to 0 (NOTE: the tiny wholes in the stairs as the girder in the rear side are all meshed. That's were the Polys live ;)
The bogeys are about 38k polys each.

Maybe it would have worked with half of the amount of polys, but this engine comes alive by its details. And hey, welcome in the 21st century with TS12 and powerfull GPUs. But serious, 200k polys - that's a joke for todays cards ;)

So feedback please, the ring is open ;)
Cheers Sachsenbahner

Alpha maps are cheap in terms of performance. Ditch all of the tiny little holes and alpha map them and that will knock the poly count WAY down.

GREAT looking locomotive!! Make a version where you lose the buffers and hooks and put an American knuckle coupler on it and I'd LOVE to have one as an industrial switcher for a mill or factory!!!
