Can anyone tell me what kind of loco this is?
This photo is a close up of a painting of Glen Innes Railway Station.
Any ideas would be apreciated :D

Glen Innes Loco

Hello Patrick,

It looks like the loco in question is a 32 class although they were know as the P class before the 1924 renumbering of locomotives. From the style of the picture, the carriages and the original condition of the cab I would say that the picture is probably from about that period.

Definitely not a 32 class (4-6-0) as the loco is clearly a 4-4-0. The design does not match any of the 4-4-0s found in my photo reference books and I am not aware of any NSW locos having cow catchers.

I suspect that it is a product of the artists imagination and may be a hybrid of several different locos - the front end (funnel and smoke box but minus the catcher) looks like a Z(14) class but the piston arrangement is wrong, The driving wheels and cab look like a Z(17) class but the two tall valves in front of the cab are anyone's guess.

I would say it is more like a Z17 Class.

The 32 class was a 4-6-0 not a 4-4-0.

The 4-4-0 types were Z12 which had an angled piston and tender springs above the footplate.

The Z14 also had an angled piston and high springs on the tender.

The Z15 had inside pistons.

The Z16 also had inside pistons.

The only other 4-4-0 was the Z17 which had straight pistons and tender springs below the footplate. The only thing not shown in the book "A Century Plus of Locomotives" on page 59 (bottom pic) is the cow catcher.
