giveaway of the day

I would advise caution if you're looking to download from sites like this.

If you want freeware, I suggest checking out the various open-source projects on sourceforge.

You'll find plenty of decent software.

Wherever you download from, google the software name and read reviews from places other than the devs website.

Too many people are willing to install unknown software.

Just a friendly warning.

:)

Good advice, In this case however the site is genuine.
It's not freeware as such, its a promotional thing to encourage people to buy the latest version or publicise products of a new company.
This site is safe and has been around for some time a couple of years now I think and is recommended by several magazines. It's done as a marketing thing in conjunction with the software manufacturers, some well known and respected software companies have used this site. Its just a different method of letting you try an old version as an incentive to upgrade to the latest product. For example Paragon often put old versions of their software on there as a try then upgrade incentive.

I have gotten at least 6 different programs from there in the past year and not had a problem with any of them. I have learned to read the reviews first.

Yeah, I didn't say the site was dodgy as such.

It's more the software developers that lack scruples, and install a lot of extras that you don't want, and some will request Internet access for registration.

The choice is yours, but people need to make an informed decision, and not install everything on a whim.

I've had to clean up so many people's computers because of a lack of discretion in this area. :D

For instance, if an app requires Internet access to register, make sure you block Internet access for it after it's registered, as well as any associated program files it's installed.
It's also a good idea to check if anything is installed to run at start-up that isn't required to run the program.

If you're an adult and it's your computer then it's your choice, but if you're a kid and it's your parents computer, just remember what it is that you may be putting at risk.

Smiley.
