Getting help window back?

Excuse me for posting the same question in two different forum areas, but I'm getting no responses in the other section.

I'm running TRAINZ 2010 and still learning the ropes, err, tracks. After I've saved a session and then reopened it, I can no longer access the driver's help window, which is obviously necessary to completing the session correctly. Am I missing a trick here?

Thanks!

I haven't seen this, but it sounds more like a bug than something you're doing wrong. Unless anyone else knows different, I'd submit a report to helpdesk - I imagine Auran will be working on a more comprehensive patch in the new year...

p.s. opening 2 threads the same is a bit of a no-no. Try to get one in the right place, and be patient.

It is the same with the previous versions. In the past questions have been send to helpdesk but they haven't done more than to send the comment forward to the programmers. Since then ... zilc, but two new versions were released and the issue is still not resolved. My guess: it will not be resolved in the forseeable future.

Yes, I can confirm that this problem goes way back to TRS2004.

So it's still not fixed eh?
Maybe you need to be a shareholder to get it fixed. :hehe:

Smiley.

Hi This is an issue with the session rules that has to be fixed at Aurans end.

When we where testing TS:MURCHISON2 a number of the testers complained about it also so I put the session files into HTML files that can be read and printed outside of TRAINZ.

So, if you're running TS:MURCHISON2 you can find the SESSIONS HTML files in the PROGRAM_FILES/AURAN/TS2009/DOC and PROGRAM_FILES/AURAN/TS2010/DOC directories.

Awkward "solution"

Thanks for all your comments. I have found a way of keeping track of session briefings. It isn't pretty, much less elegant, but it does work. Here's how: When you open a session for the first time and a briefing window opens, use any program you have on your computer that will perform a screen capture to save an image of the whole screen or, preferably, that part of the screen that contains the briefing (see below). Save the image to the desktop or some convenient folder. Note: if the briefing has to be scrolled, you may have to make multiple images. Save the session before quitting Trainz. Before opening the session again, open the image file. You can then Alt-tab back and forth as necessary to read the briefing.

Here's a sample briefing image:

GondolaShuttletrainz.jpg

Nota Bene: Screen captures can be made by simply pressing the PrtScn key to send an image to the Windows Clipboard, but that image must be pasted and saved before using PrtScn again, since the Clipboard will not hold multiple images. Fraps is a good program to use for screen captures as well. However, the Clipboard captures the entire screen and Fraps captures the entire Trainz window and the resolution of the captured images may make the briefing text difficult to read. Another solution is to open a program capable of capturing a segment of a window before starting Trainz and using it to make an image of the briefing box alone. This can be done while running Trainz either full-screen or in a window.

Easier yet, all instruction pages for a sesson can be found using CMP by setting the Search window to Category - HTML Asset. When you find the desired one you can select Edit - Edit in Explorer. Most instruction pages are in .jpg graphic format which you can douple click to view and/or print.

To find the file name(s) for a particular session you have to go to start Trainz, select the route and session and then go to Surveyor. Then click on Edit Session Rules and scroll down the list to find an HTML icon. The HTML filename will be listed.

Easier for whom?

I don't mean to sneer at your suggestion, Bob, but your method requires 1) launching Trainz, selecting Start, and using Surveyor to find the file name, closing Trainz; 2) launching Trainz again, selecting Content, and searching for that file name; 3) editing that file in Explorer and copying its text, pictures, etc. to another program where they can be saved for later use. All of that just doesn't strike me as easier than my suggested method--but perhaps someone more expert like yourself would disagree.

At any rate, the best solution would be for Auran to fix the problem: surely it should be possible to view a session's instructions after saving and restarting! For that matter, it should be possible to switch from the game itself to content manager, etc. without having to continually relaunch Trainz.

Respectfully,
