German Train Collision

It's everywhere on the news here. As for now they say the freight train failed to stop at a red signal ran over a wrong switch and smashed into the passenger train. This line has no safety system so there was no emergency application.

Sad business for all concerned. What does surprise me is the comment that there was a lack of safety matters as I always thought Germany had a reputation for great efficency, etc?

Hi all,

yeah, it's sad that something like that may take place in our time.
But I don't know if you got it in other countries than Germany, but the
"Deutsche Bahn" made economy measures during the last ten years.
So I'm not surprised by the fact, that heavy freight trains share the same route with regional trains on a unsaved track...
Always people are talking about "german standards of security" but in the last years there were to many mistakes (as frozen trains etc.^^) so that it's hard to be proud about that title.

Now they're talking about a mistake made by the driver of the freight train, who got it to jump from the 1st loco to the 2nd one. More details are still unknown.

Hope I might help you...
Greetings from cool Germany

In West Germany yes, but in the east there are many lines that still have the old "Deutsche Reichsbahn" signalling without safety system.

Just goes to show that in places such as East Germany was and meant to be people orientated were stretching it.

We had accidents in west germany all over the years as well, remember Eschede with about 100 Deaths in 1998 or the one in Radevormwald in 1971 with abot 46 Deaths (41 where teenagers) .

at least, the system in germany is obviously safe considering to the amount of trainz even though, a lot of freight is transported by lorries.

Wo do have a lot of suicidal incidents, when people finish their live, jumping in front of a train but this is very seldom reported in the news, for may be two reasons, because it happens quiete often and to much propaganda brings probably more people towards this terrible idea.

Our very popular Goalkeeper, robert Enke, who played for benfica Lisbon, Barcelona, Moenchengladbach, Hannover 96 and Germany finished his life this way in 2009, as he was suffering from depression.

Even though, i personally love trains, travelling by trains and always felt safe

Horrific

That train crash was horrifc. The passenger train looked like it had been shredded and then mangled about 5 times. I feel really sad about this horrifc accident and feel sorry for all the families involved it must be hard for them. I would have put a picture of Eschede but it is too horrifc to show

Comparing this to other major accidents in the past, this one could have been a heck of a lot worse. The carriages of the passenger train appear not to have telescoped or the bodies become separated from the underframe, as has happened in many accidents over the years.

Between the development of stainless steel stock like the NSW&VR Southern Aurora cars and their American equivilants of the 1930s, the monocoque design of the Mk3 coaches of the 1970s and good old automatic couplers, rollingstock has become incredibly resillient in the event of a collision. Such design features have made it possible that a collision of substantial force like this, the death toll can be comparitively low.

Another accident today, a freight train derailed north of Augsburg, luckily this time no injuries.

small update: just the loco derailed on a switch, so nothing major just blocked the mainline almost all day...
