A topic discussed a few times here in the forums is how Trainz looks so colorful and clean. I am not a modeler in the Trainz 3D world and don't know if making buildings with this amount of grit, grime and "Oldness" is possible but, wouldn't it be nice.

I have tried to tweak the environment settings in Trainz and have achieved some of that "old" look. I hope some of the Trainz modelers take a look at the video and offer some input on the subject.

Basically yes it on be done. Real life modelling tends to use more physical details and trainz more texture details, polys for physical details are not performance friendly. However take a look at Masontaylor's work, not America but some of the best textures in trainz on buildings.

Another bit of information regarding what I said in 1st post...."I have tried to tweak the environment settings in Trainz and have achieved some of that "old" look."

I played a game on PC called Fallout 4. A huge community of modders or content creators keeps that game going and going. The game had the ability to change the environment with a huge range of effects. From dark and gloomy to bright and colorful. Dirty and gritty was also a choice. A simple button push would instantly change the look of the environment. A search on Youtube for Fallout 4 gameplay will show some of what I experienced.

Another thought I had was......Locomotives and railcars in Trainz come in two flavors. It looks new or it looks "weathered". Some of them are very realistic looking. I'm sure the buildings for Trainz could have the same weathering.

Some of the assets for Trainz Model RR on the DLS have the Prefix of "TMR" to make them easier to find. Wouldn't it be nice if an entire section of the DLS had assets just for TMR so route creators could make a layout that looks like the video in the first post.

Weathering effects and naming conventions are up to the content-creator and both can be a bit overboard.

Some naming conventions are so confusing that I can never remember which asset is what without trial and error. It would be nice to be able to rename assets easily without having to edit config.txt files.

Weathering I agree shouldn't be all or nothing. Today, with the script-controlled weathering this is probably a lot easier to do, but the content-creator will need to come up with many, many variations of weathering instead of one or two because with Trainz such effects aren't procedural and require the content-creator to make them. If they were procedural, a random number combination using sliders could be used to generate some suitable weathering that we want with degrees of rusty, grime, and oil.

Hey John,

a random number combination using sliders could be used to generate some suitable weathering

I like that statement. Maybe these things will be in the near future of Trainz.
