GCR Version 2 - what?

I have TS12 patched to 44992, the SnC add-on and all the free stuff from the SnC site, all patched, and decided to look at available routes on the DLS. Saw the GCR Version 2, for 3.6 and checked the asset details. All good? Not so.

I started to DL, saw the size would be 2.61GB, and left it overnight. This morning, all DL'd, checked for Faulty and there were about 6. Fixed all of them except cowans crane, which was asking for a texture it already had and which showed in Pev's Mesh Viewer. Decided to leave that while I had a little think. Checked missing dependencies, and DL'd those on DLS (mostly SpeedTrees stuff, quite a lot, some large at 30-60Mbs).

All done? Not on your life! Still missing dependencies, unknown location and 168 of them. And that is when I gave up. I suppose I could have gone on the great kuid hunt, but come on. 168 of them - life's too short.

It's a disappointment, because it does look to be a good route, and also has a session available. What I am wondering is, if the asset updating that is going on at the moment, why aren't routes checked to ensure that all dependencies are readily available? There is nothing in the asset details or the Open for Edit files, no ReadMe.txt, to say this isn't so.

The upside is, I now have over 2GB of assets that I didn't have before to use on my own routes, and I think that's what I'll be doing from now on. Making my own, and not DL'ing routes, just other assets to include in my own.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant, that is not the intention. I would just like to know why routes are on the DLS, when they are incomplete. I'm not blaming the creators, but the system of the DLS.

There appears to be a bug at present where the DLS is not downloading sub-dependencies of dependencies and it is necessary to go back in and download individually. For example, I downloaded my Dalmunzie route off the DLS to the main PC and found no track displaying, which is the QR 2ft - worked alright on the laptop. The reason it wasn't displaying is because the DLS hadn't downloaded a sound dependency which I had to manually put in DL Helper. I'm not saying that is responsible for all missing 168 items but it might be worth checking some of the KUID's to see if they are hidden away.

On a broader note I do tend to agree - material hosted on the DLS should use assets which are built in, available on the DLS or at a pinch from official N3V payware routes etc. The last thing I want to do in any sim is to start going on a scavenger hunt around the net, to run a freeware route. The central repository of the DLS should be the greatest advantage Trainz has in this respect.

There is a thread that lists routes with all content on the DLS.

Unfortunately there is content that people choose for one reason or another not to put the content on the DLS. Pogfig's trees for example, his license to create speedtrees does not allow him to upload to the DLS. There is some content on the DLS that uses textures from various texture sites that are licensed only for freeware use. If ever the copyright holders complained these items would need to be removed from the DLS.

Unfortunately life isn't perfect.

Hi Ken

The creator of the route posted on the forum that he had the incompleted route (this was version 1) and asked if anyone thought they would be interested in him uploading it to the DLS. He received a number of replies from people who were interested including myself. I still have 133 missing dependencies on that route but I haven't bothered chasing them up as I found the route perfectly usable as it was. Having just read your post about v2 I am currently downloading it but still have over 1Gb of assets to download so there must be a lot of changes made between the two versions. I suspect that they will mainly concern the speedtrees as approx 1Gb of the download is speedtrees.

The black pages of the DLS used to give information about the asset that was being downloaded so if you read that it was incomplete (which quite a number were) you could then decide if you wanted to download it or not. Unfortunately, as far as I know, CM doesn't tell you this information for you to make an informed decision. I have had a lot of pleasure from running the v1 route and look forward to running the new version, especially as I've bought the D11 locos from the Darlington Works website.

Regards

Brian

Due to the size of the dependencies I split the download , downloading half of them at 3am and the rest this afternoon .

I'm down to 28 missing dependencies :

The 328583's are JVC payware foliage .

I'd say the 523: kuid may be from an addon pack as well, as it's one of N3V's user IDs.

P.S. Dave - I've just sent you an email relating to something else.

Dear All,

Many apologies that you are having difficulties with missing dependencies and also that a post on the thread "Railways of Great Britain", sent at about 2.30 pm, has not yet appeared. As far as I am aware there are no payware assets on the GCR Version 2 route, although the JVC ones were downloaded some time ago probably during my TS09 period. I do not understand how the NV3 system works and cannot understand why assets composed by, for example, Bloodnok, are listed as missing. I have adopted the policy that I will try to convert my routes to the latest version of Trainz (currently 12) and I suspect that this may be part of the problem. I do hope that some of the problems can be resolved.

Peter.

No need to fret too much , I've downloaded plenty of routes that where missing a lot more .
Had a quick fly along the route in surveyor last night and I've got to say it's superb , Instantly recognizable at a lot of places .

Any pointers on the missing content?
