Gathering of Geezers!

Curious, how many old www.trainsim.com members we got here who are still active? I've skimmed the members list and saw some familiar names from 2001-2002 like GandyDancer, and I've heard from Cadman, Splatter, and Boweavel within the last couple of years. How many of you old MSTS pioneers have switched to Trainz and are still active here?

I'm not quite as geezerly as the other two, I'm only 64 and have been here since the beginning. I bought the original Trainz but never registered it and only lurked until 2004 came out. I am registered with Train-sim as dansherman but I'm WYO here. ;)

There you go, not necessarily looking for elderly types (am I an elderly type? Dunno, 57 years old but 19 grandchildren, do you count the years or the mileage?), mainly looking for old familiar names. "dansherman" definitely counts;

Anyone who was active in trainsimming back in 2000-2002 and is still active.

going on 58 now, guess I'm considered "pre-geezer"...good to see you over here also, Sniper!

Well I guess I would be classed as a geezer from down under. I'm 74 now and started with a Hornby train sim in 1999 then moved on to Trianz 1.3. Enjoyed it so much after the Hornby one I've stuck with Trianz ever since.

Cheers,

I can boast of being 81.5, with 6 months with MSTS, and then Trainz continuously since November 2001. Is that geezerish enough? I would have started with Trainz earlier if they had advertised it sooner. Saw the advert on the TV, bought the Community version that same night, registered it on 22/11/2001.

In the MSTS period I had some dealings with www.trainsim I don't think I registered.

I'll be 82 in December. Started with MSTS when it first came out. Didn't realise there were forums for the first year then joined Trainsim . Switched to Trainz in 2002, lurked for the first six months and haved posted in Trainz forums ever since.

Good to see MSTS stawarts such as Ottodad and Sniper have finally seen the light.

Cheers

"Seen the light", I thought I was coming over to "The Dark Side" here?!

:hehe: Anyway Otto probably won't like it as much as I do, his passion is for realistic looking track junctions which is the one thing Trainz doesn't do very well. I'm just now starting to dabble in tracklaying, find myself saying "no no no that's NOT where I wanted it" quite a bit. got a few glitches and mysteries, but overall I like it better than the other two so far, been spending most of my time doing flying switches and trying to get the timing right for a dutch drop. I managed to do a passable double sawby in Railworks;

But that required two player trains in free roam and a lot of fiddling around. Looking forward to trying that with an AI train, main reason I'm here is because I've heard that Trainz has more intelligent AI traffic than the other two.

Vern had his own website - I think it was www.TrainSim.co.uk but can't really remember now.

My personal vote of thanks goes to the founder of www.crotrainz.com who introduced me to "Mechanik EN57", the first freeware train simulator developed by Polish University mathematics students. The creator of crotrainz was a disabled guy, and pretty poorly, and the web site hasn't been updated for a couple of years so while I think that might spell bad news, I certainly hope not!

The VGA graphics weren't that great, but the train had a really solid "feel" to it - typical of the first-generation steel and wood built stock.

I have been playing "Mechanik" a bit recently actually - it runs on a modern computer if you use "DOSBox" to slow down your processor's response, but when you're used to Trainz, the graphics are pretty awful!

Just turned 49 today as it happens so guess that puts me at the younger end of the "geezers" scale. Guess the main event is next year and SWMBO will be reminding me of that every day.

Sim wise I've flitted between the "big three" and all the stops in between, problem being all of them have something to offer but none of them absolutely everything. Have to say though MSTS is relegated to the occasional drive these days. Although I still have a fledging website (see www link) the raw enthusiasm I had all those years ago has largely dissipated and it gets updated only very occasionally. Same goes for route building, maybe its because I'm older or the "mojo" isn't there any more but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to stay focused on a project for very long which has led to a huge quantity of abandoned work over the last 12 - 18 months.

I have fond memories of Mechanik particularly when we got, i. The routes which had some curved sections and ii. The random route compiler/builder. Now that's something both TRS and RW could do with! My own particular soft spot is for Train Driver 3 which still runs very well in the WinUAE Amiga Emulator.

Barney was/is the founder of Crotrainz and for a while we ran a joint forum until it was overtaken by events. I think it's over a year since he was last active on here, I hope he is still okay.

66 not that old,unless of course a honeydo pops up, oooh my poor back!! Been fooling around with trains on computers from the time of the old commodore 64's

I'm 68 myself and started with MSTS. After trying very hard to figure out how to create items and routes I finally gave up after about 8 months. Google found Auran for me and I was immediately intrigued by the sim. Haven't been too dismayed with the results so far.

I still occasion the train-sim site. I'm still active in the virtual railroading side of MSTS. I need to get some work orders done so I don't get in trouble...:cool:

75 in September. Like many others I started in MSTS but got completely frustrated with the route editor. I disliked the early version of Trainz (as seen in the demo) but got converted by SP3. I didn't post in Train-Sim but did in UKTrainsim. I think my most memorable post was a picture of an exploded Kevmt's Talyllyn when trying the early version of Decapod's shape converter.

The original trainz mariner starting with 1st version but the virtual crews on the sailing ships all abandoned ships with the changing unusual events in Trainz due to dry or flat water, etc. Also as I am an old codger not an old geezer come 70 next birthday I am off to find the old codgers thread for virtual mariners who post in train forums. Hee-hee, like I said it's about trainsimming, not really biological age. One of the old trainsim "geezers" I'm looking for is Aaron Roach ("Boweavel"), he can't be more than 30 or so. Decapod will have just turned 46 (we have the same birthday, altho I'm 11 years older), but he qualifies since he was in on MSTS from the beginning. Dunno how old Keven Martin is. Primary reason I started this was to see who from 2001-2002 is still around and active, the "geezer" reference is merely whimsical. :hehe:
