The caption is :

When testing a new way to save money, the Railroad figured it'd be cheaper to ship the locomotives and tenders together. Not having a flat car long enough, they settled on this method.

(The true story here is a locomotive going too fast struck the end of a freight train while in a siding. The locomotive rode up onto the flatcar and came to a rest like this.)

The Pennsy, you can tell from the round numberplate and the font used; that and the locomotives overall appearance.

Great photo, I've seen that in a book I have before.

Percy and the Slate Trucks, anybody? :p

I was gonna say that was an Erie Loco since they got into Accidents a lot... Even without there being a Keystone, that is a PRR 4-4-0 Though. They Had Multiple 4-4-0s that had their Drivers that close together... :hehe:

They didn't always use flat cars to transport locos.

Actually, the wreck was the result of a head on collision on the New Haven RR on Feb 4, 1898.

You almost wonder if a crane dropped it there, These are perfectly layed ontop of another engine, amazing is it not?
