Beware, there are banner adds, you won't get a web host without banner/popup ads.
You also got your own ISP option and better, you could always host the site on your own internet connection (not suggested, because the upload speed is bad).
Your ISP may provide some web hosting space as part of the deal. You don't usually get very much but it might be worth investigating.
The cost if you have to pay isn't too bad. Prices tend to start at around US$4 per month, plus the annual domain name registration fee which isn't much.
This article has some introductory advice on setting up a web site but it was written in January 2006 so it may be somewhat out of date now.

I have looked over many, and so far in my research, yola is second. But none seem to have the versitility I need that was with Geocities!
the ones mentioned all have subscription services AS WELL AS free ones as well. I've used www.freewebs.com a lot; and it is good. I personally find (at least last time I used it) that it had a lot less ads.

I've been offering free web hosting for years and I think I've already mentioned it here a few times. Unlike many other hosted sites, you get PHP and MySQL which allows you to build sites with heaps of special features.
Have a look at my yacht restoration web site which is being hosted there.
Also take a look at my Trainz Resources Directory because a project as big as that can also be run on the free site. Even the script (Zen Cart) is supplied free if you want it.
The one problem you have with my hosting service is that you must be able to design your own web pages. Although it's free, it's a professional service designed for people who can program in HTML or PHP. If you can't, I suggest you stick with FreeHosts or similar where you can build simple web pages with their software.

Hmmm. I hope you didn't join our little group just to tell us that. I owned a free hosting service for over three years and offered it to members of our community more than a dozen times over the past twelve months. Only one person took up my offer, so I closed the service down only a week ago.
See my post above yours, it's one of many, but the folks here seem to prefer the easy road like Webs.com where most of their sites reside.
