Frame rate

I am running TR2009 on a low spec laptop. Most of the routes are ok but some very detailed routes bring the frame rate down to zero and the program then freezes. I have all sliders to the left and have tried both native & compatability mode.

I`m not sure whether this is a memory, processor or graphics issue.

Can anyone suggest how i can modify layouts (eg delete/replace content, etc.)to bring the frame rate up?

I`m running winxp and have 3gb ram and 2GHz processor and built in intel graphics card

any advice would be appreciated

Hi Jeff,

You problem is most likely to be the built in graphics card (there are a number of threads on the forum about this). Trainz is "not supported" on built in graphics. Unfortunately with a laptop you are probably not going to be able to do anything about this by way of a graphics upgrade.

If you are running 2009 SP2 there is a function you can switch on which displays the worst performing assets - it's then up to you to decide if you need them or not. Again there are many threads on the forum about this.

Delete any assets that don't "add value" to the way you use the route.

Multiple copies of the same asset are better for performance than lots of different assets so that is something to consider.

If the route is large then you could split it into sections and use iportals to send trains between the sections.

Just a few thoughts - I'm sure you will get more. I would suggest you try a forum search for "performance" and similar as there is lots of information available already.

Good luck!

Chris

As per specs on the 2009 box, you need a dedicated graphics card, ' minimum Geoforce2 or equivalent'. Sorry to have to say it, but end of Story.

Your other specs look marginally OK. But since its a laptop, a graphics upgrade means your probably looking at a complete replacement.

I'm running 2009 on an HP Pavilion Laptop, 2G RAM, 1.99GHz, Intel Centrino DuoCore, Mobile Intel Video.

Frame rates were not too great but switched from Open GL to DirectX which made them much better. Still not the greatest on complicated routes but tolerable on the simpler ones. At any rate I am considering upgrading the CPU to a 2.3GHz. As stated above, a separate video card is the best. I run 2004 and 2006 on my desk top, which has a separate 256M card - much better there.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Looks like it`s the graphics card that`s the bottleneck. Can`t get Open GL mode to work at all. BTW I`ve tried Trainz with Vista and Win7 on the same laptop but frame rate is worse with stuttering as well.

bpalmer,

I suspect the cpu upgade will have minimal affect.

You are probably correct. But it will be interesting hardware upgrade exercise.

I also run with no shadows and some other details tweaked downward a little, (except for train details which I run at "full"). I fully agree that to run Trainz at it's best requires a desk top with a good video card.
