Thanks everyone
Thanks everyone!
I've installed FRAPS and it does the job perfectly. The reason I wanted a FPS counter is to check that I'm not overloading a layout that I'm designing with too much stuff. I'm happy with anything over 30fps.
What is interesting is the way fps changes depending on the view. The slowest is looking along the track, as in cab view. If you rotate the view to look across the tracks, even at lots of buildings, textures etc the frame rate is faster. This is true even when the train is stopped.
I wonder if this is a CPU limitation - when you look down the tracks, Trainz has to calculate if any other train is going to come into view, work out the aspect of signals, the settings of switches etc. The more tracks, the more complicated the calculations. So the CPU, busy with program logic, can't deliver graphic information to the graphics card fast enough.
Or are tracks simply hard to draw (lots of polygons)?
Incidentally, I also use MSTS, and the same thing happens.
Cheers,
