U.P. Northern (4-8-4) 844 is scheduled to depart the Roseville yard Monday Morning (April 20th) at ~8 a.m. and arrive at the U.P. yard in Oakland ~11 a.m. via the ussual Capitol Corridor route.
She will be on display in the yard Tuesday 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. at "1408 Middle Harbor Road".
On Wednesday 844 will leave Oakland ~9 a.m. and is scheduled to arrive in Stockton ~11:30 a.m. It will pass through Niles Canyon, Pleasanton and Livermore. The route to Niles (Fremont) from Oakland is not clear. There are three routes posible.
The old Westen Pacific track has a 10 mph limit so, though most direct, is most unlikely.
The former Southern Pacific track near the hills passing through the Decoto district of Union City and used by Capitol Corridor trains would necesitate reversing through a Y at Niles to head up the canyon. That would be great for rail fans.
The third route is the longest and requires a left turn at Newark, passing the Centerville (Fremont) station. This would require moving slowly through the mentioned Y.
I intend to be at the Y.
The west bound route over the Sierras is via Donner pass on the old S.P.
The east bound route over the Sierras is via the Feather River Canyon on the old W.P.
By the way, all of the above mentioned track now belongs to Union Pacific.

Update: A close look at the above link shows the route from Oakland to Niles to be the old W.P. line, the one I keyed was most unlikely because of a 10 mph limit. Clearly 844 would never make it to Stockton on time if limited to 10 mph for the 20 miles Oakland to Niles. The source of my 10 mph information is Altamont Press's latest (20) California Region Time Table. Why 10 mph? Clearly not because of the condition of the track. I now guess that line is now largely unused by the U.P. and so the signaling is non functional. I guess 844 will be allowed to run much faster since it will be the only train on the line. That line passes next to the Y so my plans will be unchanged.
