I was doing some research and discovered this article. I find the intermingling of politics, industry, law and greed to be fascinating, I hope you do as well.

That article is quite interesting. It reminds me of a book that I read a few years ago (sorry, I can't remember the name at the moment) about the building of the transcontinental railroad in which Lincoln also had a overwhelming interest. If I come across the title of the book, I'll post it. It's definitely worth the read.
