Finding out Station Distances

Here's a handy tool for anyone basing their routes on real world railways. Based on Google maps you can use it to measure distance between two point (e.g. stations on a map)

http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-advanced-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm

Also handy for getting a rough measure of the North-South / East-West separation between points on a route.

You need to zoom in quite a bit to see all the station locations though (indicated, obviously, by the BR logo symbol)

I've figured out the best way to use it is to put all the stations (and a few other key route locations) on a route in a spreadsheet, enter the distance values and then divide these by however much you want to scale down the real distances in your route.

I'm working on a scale down of the West coast Mainline, which I've roughly estimated I can condense into a route about 60-75 squares long. In case anyone is interested (in the route or the scaling method) I'll post a screenshot of my spreadsheet when I've had time to put the numbers in.

Here's the spreadsheet with calculations. Locations that aren't stations, included because they are located at a significant deviation in track direction, are in italic. Items in grey are stations that are on a branch from the main route.

The scaled down (direct) separations were calculated as the square root of the sum of the squares of latitudinal and longtitudinal components, while these two values were calculated by multiplying by the scale-down fraction (column G).
