Fed up with 2010

I am really getting fed up with my FCT and TRS 2010. About 75 to 80% of the engines (especially steam) I download come out like this.

It seems all I am doing is loading up my hard drive with useless files. Oh well, at least most of the tenders work but I have yet to figure out a use for a tender with no matching engine. I guess I need to spend about a week or two going thru all my stuff and deleting what doesn't work. I am definitely ready to stop trying to download engines (freeware or payware) from the DLS and other sites.

I have tried learning how to fix some of this stuff but it seems the tutorials are mostly written for those who understand all the jargon and are greek to me.

Usually the reason something doesn't appear is because the item does not have all the required assets, or it is not compatible with TS2010.

Open up CMP (Content Manager) and look at the item you downloaded. Check the error line for comments, check the assets to be sure none are missing.

Some locomotives use assets from "off world" a site that is not at auran, and this is a pain because you will need to find the site where the missing part is located.

Good luck!

Check "Missing Dependencies" in CM.

Select all, right click and select "View Dependencies".

Then select "View in main list". And download everything that is on the DLS.

All of the content from SP_OR_BUST.com appears for me in Comp. mode after I dl'd the assets above the thumbnail. So check on the site for any and all assets.

Be patient, dude. We all get frustrated and lost sometimes.

Couldn't you level this criticism at any version of Trainz, not just TS2010? It seems to be the price we pay for being able to use the same dependencies in many different assets.

I don't think they could, as they only have TS2009 & TS2010 judging by the bit next to their name.
I just think it's a shame they have to miss out on all the wonderful loco's that have been made for & work well in TRS2004/6. :D

Checking for dependencies is the first thing I do. Most of time, it doesn't work because of many faults and/or errors.

You are absolutely correct Blackwatch. Auran doesn't mention in their ads that only a percentage of all those assets on the DLS works in 09 or 10. If anyone knows a secret way of looking at an asset on the DLS and knowing if it will work in 09 or 10 without downloading it first, I wish they would post it.

I stopped using TRS2010 partially because all the trees were missing their textures. And they spring up out of the ground as I went past. :(

That is abou why I reverted to 2006.

I have 2009 and I have seen 2010 working on my brother's system.

And I am fed up with paying for a program that uses my graphic card mostly to display ugly trees doing weird motions but all the same ignoring or corrupting the wonderful locos, wagons, trees and brazillions of other items that were done for earlier versions and really did satisfy me in their quality.

I do not know if 2006 is the optimum - but 2009 and 2010 are sure beyond it.

Okay, my two cents how I see it....

Hi

I have been using 2010 throughout this year and 2009 before that. Recently I had to reinstall 2006 to try something out using the SCS2006 rule. I couldn't believe how clunky and old fashioned it looked or how slowly it ran. The draw distance was terrible and the whole feeling of the game was very unsatisfactory. Once I'd done what I needed in 2006 I couldn't wait to un-install it and get back to 2010. There was a learning curve with 2009 and 2010 but there is no way I would want to go back to an earlier version now.

Regards

Brian

And I've had the opposite.

04 runs at 1680 by 1050 smooth as silk with all the sliders maxed.
09, same content "repaired", I have to run in windowed mode, sliders at normal and 2000m draw to get 30FPS or less. Mod the old and gain, dumb down the new to get almost.

Same machine, same content, different version of Trainz. Hardly worth the purchase in sim and hardware to get what I already have.

I will say that I started with 06 but never could get it to run right. After stepping back to 04, been a happy camper. I'm sure if new content gets made it may be a different story. Shame, I like the new ground textures but can't stand the new trees. I see little gain when the majority of the content 09 can use displays just as well in older versions.

Better gains could have been made elsewhere, like proper junctions for example, than this content game, which there is little of. How new is it if it still carries an 04 build for most?

There are a couple of things that I really like about TS2010, the 5 metre grid, which helps making terrain more accurate, and the 'layers' for putting routes together is great, as it helps in the fiddly crowded areas, to keep say grass splines on 1 layer seperate from fence splines on another.

When someone figures out how to convert all the good loco's & rolling stock from TRS2004 into 'native' TS2010 (compatibility is a bodge & frame eater), or makes enough new stock for TS2010, then I will make the jump.
Until then, TRS2004 runs well enough for me.

The repair of content is not that difficult. You need PEV's tools and some time. I went through all of my bad content, and anything I download now gets deleted if I can't fix it.

Many of the errors that keep the content from running are really small niddly things like an incorrect tag, for example, or a missing texture.

I run everything in native mode, and even the steam engines work fine as long as all the dependencies are there.

@Brian, I agree with you on that one. I did the same thing, and quickly moved back to TS2010.

@sparky, what kind of video card do you have? ATI cards have problems with SpeedTreez, which is a known problem. Some of the newer drivers fix that somewhat, and the latest SPs from Auran supposedly addressed this situation.

@skidmark, The performance requirements for TS2009 and TS2010 are much stricter and higher than they were for TRS2004. This would explain why you are seeing poor performance especially if your system is just at the minimum or recommended specs.

I think TS2010 EE SP3 is just super. I got the Build 42203 on DVD and it installed and ran just fine. I upgraded to SP3 Build 43434 and it ran just fine. I don't have any trouble with it, adding Sessions to my favorite two routes Avery Drexel and the Progressive Rail Jesse James Line which I downloaded and is just great for building sessions. I have purchased a bunch of finely detailed engines from Jointed Rail and they all work just fine without a hitch.

I have learned that ticking Favorites removes a whole bunch of good stuff (Not just engines) from access while building in Surveyor. TRS2004 just frustrated me and I never got into TRS2006, always going back to UTC. But as I see it, TS2010 EE is light years beyond those.

I never dreamed that I could have such a fine railroad on my computer.

If you would have taken the time to read my post, you would realize, I don't have Speedtree. That is 2010, yes? What video driver do I need to fix what I don't have or want? Should I replace my video card, even though it has very little to do with Trainz, it is CPU dependent, to improve it? Maybe SP3 of a version I don't have will fix it?

The content sucks in 09, nothing I see in 10 will change that. Maybe your "helpful" answers would actually help if they weren't so canned geared towards a lack of knowledge of the version so blatantly outlined in my post. Never said I had 2010.

But, thanks for the try.

Dave.....

Trainz 2006 after i would download some stuff the Trainz Lancher would frezze which that i had to renstall the game, but 2009 i have had no problems, and im getting 2010 soon.

Oh John, you make it sound so easy to repair assets. I have found that a lot of people who have been with Trainz since 2004 say that. Well, It is all greek to me. Sorry if I am too dumb to grasp it.

As far as performance, if you go back and read my original post, I say nothing about performance. I don't have a problem with that. My problem is that I find a nice engine on the DLS or other site, download it and all the dependencies only to find out that it has errors/faults and 2010 will not see the engine.

I need to get out more!

Like some other posters I've managed to fix all of the downloaded assets in my trs2009 and trs2010 thanks to PEVS TOOLS and a lot of commitment (I'm retired).
I would really like to upload these updated items to the DLS for others to use but I can't because of copyright and other issues.
(I feel that if a person creates content but fails to keep it updated and error free they should loose their rights to it).

It is only a game and most people probably don't have the time or inclination to commit to fixing errors in the way some of us do.
It doesn't mean that you are deficient in any way. It takes time and experience to aquire knowledge about this stuff and a lot of time to waste in this case!
Also a lot of people involved in this, including content creators are operating beyond their level of competance - hence the mess!!

I have also given up on trs2010 mainly because of poor speed issues (I have a top spec machine too) and of course Speedtrees, don't even go there!
trs2009 is quite acceptable on my machine but you may have some faulty assets to deal with (or not).

Why not try to find a copy of Trainz Classics, it won't cost much and is quite tolerant to errors caused by sloppy construction. It is also still quite well supported.
I prefered trs2006 in the past but a very buggy Content Manager let it down for importing and modifying new stuff.

Its only a game... I must get a life. Repeat after me a hundred times :)

I too am getting really fed up of TS2010. It SUCKS SO BAD!!! :n:

...the thing that gets on my goat is "real life"... and how I can't devote as much time to TS2010 as I would like :p

To ceri1981-I'm running 2010 on a minimum spec machine. On a route literally FULL of speedtrees, I get maybe a half-second pause every 3-5 minutes watching a consist roll along at 62 mph. I recommend you spend a couple hours fiddling with your settings in the game, and your graphics control panel. You've got to have an adjustment issue.

To skidmark22-Check out my join date. I bought UTC at the beginning of July, and 2010 at the end of July. At that point, I didn't even know what the hell a kuid was. I have since fixed most broken/malfunctioning assets, and even re-skinned a few. I agree that it does look intimidating at first, but it's really not. Once you understand the file relationships, it gets pretty easy. You've just got to jump in and play around with stuff. I'm sure this forum would be happy to answer your questions. I say, go for it! (and I fix cars for a living-my computer knowledge is pretty basic)
