Ethics question. On permissions

Hi all. What is the forums thoughts and NV3 on using other peoples content. In particular. I am working on something now, and I am using a figure in it that Elvenor created long ago. He has sadly passed away so permissions from him of course are not possible. I am only making a figure on a ladder, reposing it. If I still provide full credit to him, is this considered bad or acceptable within community standards? his western figures are so darn good.

thank you for your input.

If you are going to create a completely new asset using your own kuid that incorporates someone else's work then sadly no, you cannot do this without permission of the creator, the current copyright holder or the original creator's estate. If you are simply adding the kuid of an asset from another creator into the config.txt file of your asset, such as adding their bogie or engine sound to your railcar, then AFAIK an acknowledgement is all that is required since you are technically not altering, copying or otherwise pirating their work.

An alternative solution that I have sometimes used is to create a "new asset" by combining existing assets in Surveyor. For example, you could create the ladder asset by itself, place it in the layout and then position the human figure asset on the ladder.

My thoughts.

Look at the licence in his Western Figures assets, it's in the configs and seems to cover your requirement, I know for a fact several others have modified his figures.
