Essential Downloads

I just got a first class ticket and am rather excited as for the first time ever i can download something that doesn't take all day!

So is there any "essential" or really useful assets on the DLS that can be used in route making?

Also, are there any really good routes on the DLS? (preferably with sessions)

Thanks in advance,

Yes!

Sorry for being rather vague but your questions are rather redundant given that your personal taste is going to drive the answers. Please be more precise with your questions, and you will no doubt get more precise answers.

Sorry, i was in a hurry...

I suppose what i am really struggling to do is make realistic looking settlements. So is there any kits to be able to build villages, towns and cities?

Also i like modern stations, so is there any nice ones on the DLS?

And then anything else that looks modern and would look good in a near-future time.

As for routes, preferably electric, passenger, but fun at the same time :D

A good modern, electric passenger route is the Midshire Mainline which has overhead wires for electric passenger trains as well as a few freight branches. There is also an explore session with trains running up and down the route with a few uncontrolled trains for you to drive. There are some good high speed stretches as well but be warned that there are some dependencies not on the DLS. Have a look here for them: http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=67662&highlight=midshire

I have a number of station buildings on the DLS (made for TRS2004, so you will need to tick the box) - search for 'Modern Station ...'

These are based on the 'new' BR station buildings from the 1960's modernisation plan, made from prefabricated panels. Green, red and grey panels available, as per prototype. User's choice of station name can be dis0played.

The range includes buildings for island platforms and a number of modules which can be assembled in any preferred order, and the doors can be named as desired by using the '?' button in Surveyor.

No UK route is complete without buildings by TafWeb, railcentre, DomSarto, and even (dare I say it) myself :o . Also have a look at James73's tower blocks and quarter villas for that council estate look.

The station, junction and tunnel kits by andi06 are a must-have, also have a look at the UK bridges and embankments by FMA. UK overhead by snowsignal with extra items by sonne03 (I think) and nexusdj. Signals by Bloodnok, nexusdj and others.

I'd have to agree that midshire mainline is excellent...

Paul

p.s. forgot that marky7890 has also produced some excellent stations and other buildings.

Another thing you could consider as a fast way of getting started is to download a route or two that appeal to you. Get your CMP to download all the required assets, and then you delete the Route(s). You will be left with all the assets! Just a thought.

Regards. Colin.

I did that for a while, downloading only routes in order to get large handfuls of assets from them. Only problem is you end up with a lot of weird crap...

Hi L_W,
  • Weird?!!!!!!!!! :hehe::p Were you downloading Klingon assets? :p (-tlhIngan Hol- in Klingon)
  • Crap?!!!!!!!!!! Next time you'd better wear other glasses before downloading. ;)
C'mon, guys and gals, and especially newcomers. There's no crap at the DLS. Just assets, human assets like human themselves: Good, less good and undefined. :D

What is really contained there is long long long hours of human personal effort and skills... and now washed, fried and ironed, even combed. :hehe:

Talents are a constant, and from time to time... comes out the undefined... like mine. But above all, there's a lot of respect for everybody's work. Hope the new owners can understand this too.

That pretty much says it all!

Because we don't like it does not mean it is crap, any more than because we don't understand something does not mean that it is stupid.

Trainz assets can take huge amounts of personal time to create and if you find something that is "not to your liking", then simply delete it off your PC.

Simple really!

I have found monkeys wearing bathing suits in my DLs. To me that's weird, but perhaps I offended the guy that made them...

Well that is certainly different.......... but no doubt of use in some scenario! I have not come across those, but have deleted many other assets due to being inappropriate for my own Routes. With the sheer volume of assets available on DLS intended to service a world wide customer base, I think some oddities are going to be inevitable.

Regards. Colin.

I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone who puts effort into such creations. I just personally found assets like that to be weird. My point about it was just that you will find such unexpected things when downloading numerous routes...:o

And yes, I just simply deleted those things.

I fully understand about the weird assets, but monkeys in bathing suits?!? Surely those are a must-have if only for the novelty of having them :D
