Were, and still are.... If you do a little looking around here in Tracy Ca you can find a ton of searchlights still littering what once was the line.... If you want a fun place to do some sightseeing, SP's Altamont Pass is a wonderful place to spend the day. You can do a bit of hiking with the old roadbed and get some pretty nice views of the hills from the SP perspective.... I used to do it quite often, but haven't for a while, though I highly recomend it.
